I’ve successfully installed Eclipse 3.0 M8 and MyEclipse 3.7.2 but because of instability problems or just because I wanted a “fresh start” I would un-install both and re-install. I’ve done that at least 25 -30 times in the last 3 weeks. Now I find that I cannot re-install at all. What usually happens is that after I install MyEclipse, Eclipse startup hangs on the splash screen. Or I get this dialog on top of the splash screen – “Error. Unable to read workbench state. Workbench UI layout will be reset.” I click OK but it stays stuck. The only thing I can do at that point is to kill the task from the OS (Win XP Pro). I thought this might have something to do with my habit of defining a workspace directory outside of the Eclipse home directory, but even if I let the new workspace default, Eclipse fails to start. I’ve been carefult to re-start Windows after each attempt. Here’s my log:

Update: I let my failed re-install sit for awhile (long enough to compose my last post) and went back and tried a restart. It worked. ❓

Its possible that something critical timed out.
I too am having the same exact issue as yellowdog. It must have something to do with writing a message in this forum… 😉 as soon as I started writing this message, and let the splash screen sit, the application shut down on its own. Upon restarting the myEclipse plugin information is available!

This is most likely because M8 has lots of problems with the proper saving of its configured state. What I would guess is happening is that it runs long enough to cause it to discard it’s state as erroneous and do a full reconfiguration on restart, thus fixing the issue.
