OK, I was opening, by mistake the eclipse.app file, not the myeclipse.app.

Still having same problems by editing the correct file, however.

Making the changes as Joy suggested to myeclipse.ini file still gives me the following errors when trying to “Run” Pulse to add the software feature (Tried with both PMD and the line Counter Add-in):

    ———————————————————-

    ‘update’ has encountered a problem.
An internal error occurred during: “update”.

    (Then, below in “details”:)
An internal error occurred during: “update”.
    Java Heap Space

    ———————————————————-

My current myeclipse.ini file has, per Joy, these settings:

    -startup
    ../../../../Common/plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.101.R34x_v20080819.jar
    –launcher.library
    ../../../../Common/plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.carbon.macosx_1.0.101.R34x_v20080731
    -clean
    -configuration
    ../../../configuration
    -vmargs
    -Xmx512M
    -XX:PermSize=128M
    -XX:MaxPermSize=256M
    -Dorg.eclipse.swt.internal.carbon.smallFonts
    -XstartOnFirstThread

    ———————–

Also note that if, in Pulse, I try to do an update “from an update site”, I just get a blank dialog box with no update site listed to check off.

Let me know what we can try next, OK?

    Thanks E.

    Eugene,

    Just a bit more info…

Running Pulse app file outside MyE doesn’t work either.

Trying to have it “Run”… just sort of hangs. No updates or progress bar appears.

Trying to have it “Add from update site” again just brings up a blank update site.

Tried this with two plug-ins as before.

    Look forward to hearing back.

    Thanks.

So you are using Pulse Explorer, right?

Yup, Using the “manage in pulse explorer option”.

    (Menus>>>>Help…Software Updates…Manage in Pulse Explorer)

Would it be helpful if I called you?

I apologize for confusion – Joy and me misunderstood the problem.

I believe your problem is a Pulse one – the fix is described here – http://www.poweredbypulse.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3086&postcount=3 :

On Mac to solve this problem I did the following:
    Locate the pulse-explorer application <pulse folder>/InstallLocation/Pulse Explorer/pulse-explorer
Right clicked and selected “Show Package Contents”
In resulting finder navigated to Contents > MacOS
Edited pulse-explorer.ini, updating the -Xmx value to 768
I then launched pulse-explorer directly and didn’t see the problem again.

If I now launch Pulse Explorer with this new setting I don’t get the error. Thanks for that.

But, pulse still isn’t working correctly.

The plug-in (PMD and the line counter were the two I tried) still aren’t showing up as installed and are thus not available.

I went into Pulse and selected PMD and added it to my profile.

Then in my profile I selected PMD, right clicked, and “Run”. MyE said it added the plug-in, but when right-clicking in a source code file or on a project, PMD does NOT show up
in the menu. Also, the line counter plug-in is nowhere to be found.

Also, PMD is not shown as a perspective you can select.

What do I need to do to resolve this?

    Thanks.

    MyEclipse is very confused.

In the plug-in details (under the MyEclipse menu), I do not see PMD installed.

However, under Help…Software Updates…, PMD is listed as installed under Personal Software.

The bottom line, of course, is that PMD is nowhere to be found once you start MyEclipse.

    PMD is now working.

I removed it and re-installed, and sigh, it works.

I have another problem, but I’ll open a new thread for that.

    Thanks for the help!!!

    Thanks for your help!

    I’d suggest a few improvements:

    1. Much better error messages with help about what to do. Not just dropping a cryptic error in the user’s lap. Better yet, if MyE could just fix the problem in the first place….

I’d suggest all developers read Alan Cooper’s “About Face” book (and he has a revised one more for the Web development world too).

    2. A way to administer the “myeclipse.ini” files though the interface. I had no idea, being a relatively new Mac user, that you could go into an .app file like you told me (great tip, thanks!)

2.a. A way to edit other files using some unified interface.

    3. Support folks who use and know the Mac platform so it doesn’t take 20 back and forths to get to someone like you who knows what the Mac is.

    4. (Somebody needs to) Fix Pulse so it really removes plug-ins like Flex. That’s where my problem started. I couldn’t do an update since Pulse still had Flex references. That was my first re-install of MyE and several hours.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your terrific help today!!!!
