The problem is that the executable is using OpenJDK, rather than a Sun JRE to run. You can explicitly set the JRE from the commandline with:
    -vm <path-to-sun-1.6-jre>/bin/java

That should resolve the problem with the installer. Also note that you’ll likely have to fix the ‘too many open files on Linux’ configuration item as well from here: https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/troubleshooting-how-to-fix-too-many-open-files-on-linux/

Thanks Scott – I’m running the following:
./myeclipse-latest-installer -vm /<mylocalpath>/jdk1.6.0_14/jre/bin/java -vmargs -Xms128M -Xmx512M -XX:PermSize=64M -XX:MaxPermSize=128M but that seems to have no effect (please see the error below)… It does get a bit further along though:

Well, I just checked with the development team to make sure I’m right about the JDK issue. It’s actually one I’ve personally run into before and sometimes it’s a bit tough to work around. But it’s definitely caused by OpenJDK getting used during the install (OpenJDK doesn’t do SSL / crypto which is why you’re seeing those exceptions.

Here’s what I got back from the dev team:

This appears to be the normal OpenJDK issue. I don’t believe passing -vm to the installer (eclipse executable) causes that same argument to be passed to -vm of the launcher. The exception received occurs when either the installer or launcher finds the OpenJDK as the preferred JDK/JRE on the system. This problem with OpenJDK is fixed on Pulse 2.5 (still in development) but does persist in 2.4.2 (part of MyEclipse 7.5). The workaround normally has to do with ensuring the right JDK is used. Two options exist — one is to let the installer run the Pulse Explorer and have it fail, and then at that point manually run the Pulse Explorer with the -vm argument, the other is to properly change the default JRE on the system. As I know you’ve hit before, changing the system default JRE is not always as easy as it sounds so the first workaround might be easier.

I did have to go through this once before on Fedora 10 and here are my exact steps:

So, here's what I did to get this moving
    1) I do everything in virtual machines for reproduciblity and this was no different. So, I started by downloading the preconfigured "Fedora 10p" virtual machine from here: http://bagside.com/bagvapp/index.html
    2) I launched the VM with VMWare VMPlayer and logged in with username "bagside" and password "bagside"
    3) I ran su to get a root shell (password bagside) and ran 'yum update' to get the latest of everything.
    4) After that completed I installed JDK 6 Release 14 from java.sun.com by downloading their "...rpm.bin" file, executing it, then running 'rpm -i jdk-6u14-linux-i586.rpm'. Nothing really runs correctly with OpenJDK, which is installed by default.
    5) That install process created /usr/java/
    6) Made that the default by: 'mv /usr/bin/java /usr/bin/java-openjdk' and 'ln -s /usr/java/latest/bin/java /usr/bin/java'
    7) opened a command shell and ran 'java -version' to ensure I saw:
    java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
    8) Still as root I ran 'ulimit -n 4096' because running MyEclipse without this had a ton of problems due to running out of file handles. Low file handle limits seems to be a known issue with Fedora 10.
    9) Now I needed to install MyEclipse. For that I used Pulse by downloading the 32-bit Linux version of the Pulse installer at http://www.poweredbypulse.com
    10) Ungzipped and untarred the pulse installer then ran it
    11) After installation I ran Pulse, selected 'Anonymous' when prompted for a 'login mode'
    12) When the Pulse Explorer displayed, I highlighted MyEclipse 7.5 and pressed the green "Run" button
    13) After the install, MyEclipse launched
    14) To address the "too many open files" issue for other users, see this post: https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/troubleshooting-how-to-fix-too-many-open-files-on-linux/

Please let us know how this helped and if you have any other questions.

Thanks Scott – my admin did something similar using alternatives (http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f10.html#java) and it is working now.

    Also upped the file handles.

    Thanks again

You have an admin? Lucky devil! I had to blunder my way through this myself. 😉

I’m sure he figured out something much more elegant. Glad it’s working for you now.
