DavidMemberHi,
I notice there doesn’t seem to be any comment in the forums about the Matisse4MyEclipse announcment. I hope that doesn’t mean there isn’t some interest and enthusiasm about this. I have, from time to time, played around with the Eclipse Visual Editor, but always come away thinking “not quite there”. And everytime I would see a demo of Matisse, I would think “Couldn’t that be ported to an Eclipse plug-in?”, fantasize a bit, and then got back to work. I really plan to use this.
I have a question, though. From the screenshots, it looks like you are running on a 3.2 Milestone build, without MyEclipse installed (there’s no MyEclipse menu item). Will the final release be able to run on 3.1.x? And also, if you are getting into rich Swing clients, do you plan to provide support for different deployments, like Applets and JNLP files?
Anyway, it looks great, and I just wish I could download a development build and play with it already.
Dave
Scott AndersonParticipantDave,

Thanks for your interest. I think most of the followup has been over at EclipseZone, or other areas where it’s being chatted up.
For others interested, in case you haven’t found the screenshots Dave is talking about they’re on the Matisse4MyEclipse page.
As for your questions, we’re really being a bit tight-lipped on purpose; helps build excitement, don’t you think? 🙂
If you’re coming to EclipseCon, we’ll be showing a lot more about this effort there. For a bit more info, I’d suggest you read the recent blog by Wayne here: http://jroller.com/page/wparrott?entry=matisse4myeclipse_why_we_did_it
We’ll talk more when allowed, but please tell your friends and fire up that blog! 🙂
Calvin VetteMemberAs for your questions, we’re really being a bit tight-lipped on purpose; helps build excitement, don’t you think? 🙂
No. Even Microsoft tells people about delays from a planned release date.
EclipseCon is over. The end of the month is past. And there’s still not even a “we’ve been delayed two weeks” announcement or however long it’s going to be. The page hasn’t even been updated – it still has the now-past-due dates. Or were we talking about EclipseCon 2007?
In fact the only difference has been the flash demo released on April 3. That should have been the time to announce the delay.
You can’t sweep it under the carpet and pretend it didn’t happen.
Werner PunzMemberhuh what are you talking about, the roadmap has been updated for almost two weeks now.
Riyad KallaMembercalvinvette,
I’m not sure where the aggression is comming from, but Matisse4MyEclipse will ship a release soon (I think the last word from management was a week or two). I’m staring at my inbox right now for Issue tracker messages and I see a lot of little last minute bugs being fixed up, crap like “Add action listener twice and get a NullPointerException”. These are a the types of things that really ruin a first experience with a tool, so we aren’t going to release it until we have worked out all those annoying kinks. That is also a sign that all the big work is done and now it’s just use-case testing.I’m sorry if you are feeling ignored or like Genuitec is trying to play games, we aren’t. But like everything, the proof is in the pudding. So when we get Matiss4MyEclipse out the door here, we’d appreciate it if you sent us some feedback. What works, what sucks, what needs some tweaking and so on.

But it has no mention of Matisse. It says 5.0M1 will be released mid April, with a GA around June.

It’s not aggression – it’s frustration. (Between this and Eclipse Bug #67384 I’m really ready to scream!. These are the two major features I need for my work, and I’m blocked into kludgy solutions and work-arounds to get the job done.)
I may have misread the http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-77.html page before it was changed, but I was under the impression that it was coming out at the end of March. Regardless, the page still hasn’t been updated. (And despite the above post, the road map doesn’t have a reference to it either unless I’ve completely misread that as well).
The page currently says:
…by the time the work is complete and the official announcement is made at EclipseCon 2006 at the end of March
Today’s April 10th. At the very least that page needs to get changed. If the official announcement was made, it should have been copied or linked to on that page. I can’t read your inbox, so I have no idea how close we are.
Honestly, scott’s statement about keeping us in the dark really pissed me off after March and EclipseCon had passed. (So maybe there’s your aggression.)
And I don’t think you’re trying to play games – I just think you could keep us in the loop more. (I know, you and I have corresponded on #67384, and I appreciate that. I wish you all had a solution to it, though!). Updating the site is critical – especially key pages like this one and the About MyEclipse page (which still refers to the upcoming aggressive 2005 roadmap).
Riyad KallaMemberDon’t get us started on 67384. It annoys you as a user, it actually *costs* us money for each person that doesn’t buy a subscription because of it. We have done and will continue to do what we can to get it fixed, I’m even happy to send any of the platform developers a dozen boxes of Krispy Kremes as thanks if it helps.
As far as the page update goes you are right, I’ll send a reminder to the guys in charge of keeping that stuff recent. As far as Scott’s comment goes, I’ll go pour a hot cup of coffee down his back, that’ll keep him in line.
