My Mac PowerBook Pro laptop was stolen so I had to restore to another one from my external hard drive used by the Time Machine application. MyEclipse fails to launch and jumps to the problem report almost immediately. This is the only app that fails after restoration. I could not find a log file; the MyEclipse splash screen did not show up. Below is a copy of the report sent to Apple. I also ran the disk utility to repair permissions and verify the disk.

I am currently downloading the stand alone installer for Mac and will try that.

I never tried restoring MyEclipse from back-up.
1. Is your machine up-to-date? This looks like a problem with Java VM not ME.
2. Please check permissions using Disk Utility.
3. If it doesn’t help, please reinstall ME.

1 – Yes, but this was the first time to restore from time machine – looks like they may have some bugs.
2 – I ran Disk Utility before posting the problem as stated above.
3 – Yep, I reinstalled and had to re apply all my preferences and plug-ins and… Which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place.

All is well now, but lesson learned – backups are worthless if you can’t restore from them.

Glad to hear you’re back up and running, but I totally agree about backups. My experience has been they’re never quite there when you really need them as well, unfortunately.

For my development needs I created an RW disk image file where I keep the workspace. I didn’t notice any performance problems (my workspace is almost 2Gb) and I can back it up using simple scripts (I didn’t want to use TM for workspace backups as there would be too many small backups). You can then copy/clone the disk image everywhere you want (i.e. another computer).
