Riyad KallaMemberI’ve already asked this, but just so there was a public posting of it (for comments or reminder sake) I was requesting that the DEFAULT setting for posting OR replying be “notify me when a reply is posted” set to TRUE. This is one of the most fundamental reasons why the Gentoo forums are so active, you never get lost or thrown out of the loop.
For example, I logged in today, looked at the icon next to the forums and it said there were no new posts. So I sat there all day long staring at them, until finally I got bored and clicked on the “bugs” forum, only to find that Scott had replied to almost every one of my bug reports!
If I had gotten emails for each of these I could have quickly replied to them, or commented further on my problems, instead of waiting an entire day only to find the new posts manually.
I really think this feature is important, not just a “wish list” item.
Thanks guys,
RiyadRiyad,
Enabling global auto notification as you can imagine will get us in the spam hall of fame very quickly. But allowing users to select that option is very useful as you have articulated very well. This capability already exists in this forum. It is part of the user profile which we intentionally kept under wrap to avoid confusing our members with having to maintain two separate profile information. But now that you asked, and for those that need this capability, use the following link to access your profile.

Select “Yes” for the “Always Notify me of replies” option.

Riyad KallaMemberAhhh yes! Thank you Jim, I was looking for this page the first day I registered here at ME. Oh I think this is a nice compromise although (and this is just a comment on my part), its not that you are just randomly sending everyone emails; if “notify me of a reply” was default to on, then only people participating in certain conversations would be notified, in which case they can stop “Watching” the thread if they wish, or keep going back and participating in the conversation. So I’m not totally onboard with the spam-comment, because this wouldn’t be unsolicited email.
You guys do whats best for ME, thanks for opening up that page btw.

Jim can this edit profile page be exposed somehow to users? I have to come back to this thread every time I want to adjust settings w.r.t. to these options. It should be visible to everyone now. The link to it is in the top sub-menu titled “Profile”
