I just spent a couple of hours dealing with a stack overflow error in the JSP validator. I had just done a full reinstall of Eclipse 3.01 and ME 3.8.4 due to an indescretion with a Visual Paradigm evaluation and grabbed my projects from CVS when the following message started appearing in the Problems tab for my Web project:
Severity Description Resource In Folder Location Creation Time 1 Run-time exception java.lang.StackOverflowError occurred during validation. The validator being run was JSP Validator and the message thrown was . ePlannerWeb February 9, 2005 2:07:31 PMThis seemed to bring the IDE to a halt as far as building was concerned and ME refused to deploy the Web portion of the J2EE Application project.
I was ultimately able to correct the problem by toggling JSP validation off and back on again in the project preferences.
The bad part is that I’m not able to repro this problem. I thought I would post it in the event that anyone else hits this wall and comes searching, and to notify the ME team of a potential bug.
For the record: the reinstall was done clean, meaning that the original ME and Eclipse installations were completely deleted. This wasn’t project specific, as I opened other projects in other workspaces and encountered the same error.

(Which, BTW, has not yet been responded to – not your usual turnaround… :-/ )However, in my case the problem is not fixed by toggling the validation on/off
either at the project or ME/Preferences levels. I still get SOEs every time I
try to validate a JSP whether individually or by project. Since JSP validation is
one of the main reasons I purchased ME and waited patiently through the 3.8.0GA
to 3.8.4 fixes, I would really appreciate some advice on what to do about this.Thanks,

First I want to appologize for missing your first post. The way we answer posts around here is either by using the “View unanswered posts” off the front page, or look for the little “Unread” markers which appen to be very flaky… the reason I never saw your post is because you followed up with another reply, which made it ‘unanswered’ and likely the ‘Unread’ icon never showed up so I just flat out missed it.Secondly, there seems to be something up, I’m going to add your notes to the issue while we are investigating. I’ll try and see if a dev can reply to this soon, they are really swamped now though.
Guys, we are tracking this bug now but the developer looking into it replied that to try and fix something like this, we absolutely need some kind of reproducable test case, without that, this likely won’t go anywhere (we never have time to just sit down and ‘try things until they break’ so we really need you guys to tell us the environment you are using and how to break it).
Also keep in mind that you are the only 2 to ever report this problem out of the 10s of thousands of users we have, so from our dev’s POV it is too time consuming to try and figure out (by himself) what you two are doing that causes this and so many other users aren’t doing that don’t have this problem.
BUT, if we can nail down a test case, I garuntee something will be done about this.

I know this situation first hand. A fellow co-developper of me always curses at the MyEclipse JSP editor, but I don’t think he ever posted a single message on this board to complain or report about his problems. Again I no doubt agree with you and *want* to help, but that doesn’t change the need for a test case or some sort of series of actions that the developers can use to a) figure out the problem and b) make sure it gets fixed.
There is always the “wait and see”, sometimes bugs just get fixed randomly in releases, but I don’t necessarily encourage that as it can end in one very frustrated developer. I would say one of the biggest problems for me is that I use ME every day for about 5hrs on average for coding, so if this was a common problem it seems I would have come across it in atleast on incarnation between 2.6 series (when I started) and now, and I haven’t…
Also if your coworker won’t post a bug report, maybe you can install a keylogger on his machine and when he curses, just post the log 😀
I more than agree with you on the necessity of a test case. Again, I experience this with my own software too. It’s really hard to fix something without that, even if you do have a detailed exception log.
The point however is that a lot of times you can’t just sent in a complete project on which the editor fails: projects are often propriatery and closed source. The next time I run into a JSP editor problem, I shall see if I can set up a test project with the same conditions as the project I’m editting. For large projects this is diffcult of course, since their can be so many conditions that effect the editor:
Are there errors in JSP includes?
Are fragments ending on JSP or JSPF?
In what way are includes added to a page?
Are taglibs being used, if so which ones?
Are the JSP files long and complex. Do they contain javascript?
Is javascript indented or not, do they appear before or after scriptlets.
Do scriptlets appear before or after JSP includes that contain errors.
… etc etc…I often found that such things influence the stability of the editor. If I would like to create a test case, I might have to take all such things into consideration and recreate them in a project which doesn’t contain propriatery code.

I’ve started to see a pattern emerge with this. It seems to break when I sync my web project with CVS. Not every time, but when I’ve got a lot of files moving back and forth it will eventually blow up with the stack overflow message in the Problems tab.
I wish I could give you something a more specific, but maybe the Team Sync direction will spark something.
I’m having the same exact issue and I also notice it after I sync with CVS. Have you found any resolution or work around?
