Pete HelgrenParticipantThis is a cross post from the Eclipse IDE feature request queue:
This would be a fairly “narrow” market opportunity but with IBM Rational dropping support for RAD and WSAD it is also dropping WDSc (Websphere Development Studio Client) for System i. WDSc is development tool for developing ILE RPG and Cobol programs targeting the System i running i5/OS. At the simplest what would be needed would be source editors for ILE RPG and a simple call to submit that source to the compiler on the System i. Also it would be helpful to have a compiler error reporting component.
There is a fairly large community of users affected by the change IBM is making. I think it would be worthwhile for you folks to explore the possible opportunities here. I believe that an open source project hosted here would be a great way to get some System i community members to use MyEclipse. Feel free to contact me if you need more information. You could also scan the WDSC mailing list at midrange.com in the general date range of 02/10/08 – 02/15/08 to get a sense of the issues.
Loyal WaterMemberThanks once again. Appreciate your feedback.
albartellMemberAs a WDSC and MyEclipseIDE user I second the motion. It would be great to have something I could recommend as a cheaper alternative to RDi (the now new name for WDSC which runs $795 per seat not including maintenance).
Even if you could point some of us in the right direction that would help (I develop in Java and RPG and wouldn’t mind getting into Eclipse based tool development).

FinkpadMemberAs a relative noob in the world of Eclipse – I would love to see this as an alternative to RDi. Accessing iSeries would be huge reason for attracting other iSeries (AS400) usrs to MyEclipse and an incredible cost saving for the System i owner.
/me puts his hand up to volunteer for any component testing.

Have you seen the recently announced RPG editor named RPG Next Gen? You can find it here: http://www.rpgnextgen.com. Note that it is free, open source, and based on Eclipse and JTOpen.
