grimholtzMemberHi,
We are using WebSphere Advanced Edition 4.0.5 (not WebSphere Advanced Single Server Edition). 4.0.5 is the most recent version of WebSphere 4.x.Neither the Advanced Edition nor the Enterprise Edition of WebSphere use a configuration file (server-config.xml) to store configuration properties: they both use DB2 for this purpose.
However, if I leave the “XML Configuration File” field of MyEclipse WebSphere 4 empty (since I have no XML config file), and then start WAS in Eclipse, I get the following error:
no value specified for argument: configFile Usage: java com.ibm.ws.runtime.StandardServer [-configFile <server configuration file>] [-nodeName <name of node>] [-serverName <name of server>] [-traceString <package name>] [-traceFile <file name>] If no configuration file is specified and the environment variable server.root is set to the WebSphere installation root, then the default configuration file, server-cfg.xml, will be used.
What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance for your help.
Eric Jung
Scott AndersonParticipantEric,
You’re not doing anything wrong. We simply don’t support the use of WebSphere Advanced Edition with MyEclipse. So far there doesn’t seem to be a ton of interest. I always guessed that it was either because WebSphere shops that deploy on it still develop on the single server version for ease of development. Or, if they have enough money so that everyone can develop on the advanced edition that they’ve spent so much money with IBM that they’ve effecively been given lots of WSAD licenses. 🙂
grimholtzMemberInteresting. Believe it or not, we can’t get our hands on the Single Server Edition. IBM won’t sell it anymore (at least version 4.x). So I’m not sure how to proceed… any suggestions?
Scott AndersonParticipant>IBM won’t sell it anymore (at least version 4.x).
Yikes, I had no idea. One way to proceed is to not offer to buy it. I’d simply try to call your IBM rep and insist that they provide you complementary copies of it so you can use it for development ease. IBM is all about service and helping you succeed. If you’re a good paying customer, our experience with them is they’ll do whatever it takes to make you happy. The key is not to ask any support or tech guys. You have to go directly to your main SALES guy. Sales guys like happy clients and have a lot of pull in any organization. Please let us know how this goes.
grimholtzMemberHi Scott,
Since we’ve already spent an enormous amout of effort trying to obtain WAS 4.x (for other but somewhat-related reasons), I thought I’d share our experiences with you.
Our parent company is Mellon Financial Services/Mellon Bank (http://www.mellon.com). Mellon is the 6th largest investment management company in the US, the 4th largest provider of human resources consulting, and has the 5th largest mutual funds operations in the US.
All our purchasing of IBM products and services is done by Mellon. So I hope that shows you the clout we probably have with them.
IBM will not give us nor sell us any edition of WebSphere 4.x. Believe it or not, the last argument we had with them, they finally agreed to sell it. However, when the media arrived, it was Websphere 5.0.
Bottom line: it is no longer available.
As for:
One way to proceed is to not offer to buy it
Since our corporate decision is to use WebSphere, this is not possible.
Scott AndersonParticipantWow! I’m absolutely amazed that a sales guy would say “no” to such a large client. By the way, by “not offer to buy it” I didn’t mean don’t use it, I meant work around the fact that it is no longer for sale by insisting that they give it to you for free. Just because they have no way to sell it any more doesn’t mean all the media suddenly vanished. But, given your experience I don’t suppose that’s much of an issue either.
I wish I knew what to tell you but I don’t think we’ve got WAS AE 4.x support on the roadmap to support since 5.0 is out. Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that Genuitec is also a consulting company so we’ve been known to provide custom additions for large clients on either a turnkey basis or in order to sell a large set of licenses. 😉 Just a thought.
