Kind regards
Emmanuel
Riyad KallaMemberEmmanuel,
It will be after 3.8 GA comes out. Not sure how long after though.
emmanuelMemberHello Riyad,
Thank you. Could you give me an indication of whether it might be weeks or months?

Scott AndersonParticipantEmmanuel,
Our project management has been asking us about whether or not people are rapidly upgrading to Eclipse 3.0. From our download statistics it appears that they overwhelmingly are. However, since you’re asking about 2.8, I assume that you are not. Can you share why not with us as this helps us prioritize our development schedules.
emmanuelMemberHello Scott,
We were not planning to go for Eclipse 3.0 as yet. And for no major reason, other than;
a) We’re currently exclusively using WSAD (which is based on Eclipse 2.x),
b) Maturity of Eclipse 3.0,
c) Having our community working with very different features of E2 (WSAD) and E3 (ME).Our plan is to use WSAD and MyEclipseIde interchangeably and over time naturally reduce WSAD usage and increase MyEclipseIde usage.
Your question about why we’re not going for E3 has got me thinking.
However, in the event that we want to stick with E2.x for now, could you please assist by providing a closer estimate of 2.8.0 Beta-2 or in fact 2.8GA.
And please advise whether your company is not planning to produce a ME2.8GA, then we’ll take that into account with our decision-making.
Kind regards
Emmanuel
Scott AndersonParticipantEmmanuel,
I don’t know the answers on timeline, but I’ll kick it “upstairs” so that our management team can see your comments and answer your questions.
emmanuel-tertiaMemberAny news as yet?
Scott AndersonParticipantSorry. I noticed that no one had responded and resent my request to the management team this morning. I’ll keep prodding them. 🙂
Maher MasriModeratorEmmanuel,
Supporting multiple Eclipse platforms with constantly changing set of features for Eclipse and MyEclipse have been a daunting task for our developers. Eclipse 2.x had been our primary development platform until now. With the production release of Eclipse 3.0, it has taken center stage as reflected in the number of users and downloads. Our immediate effort is focused primarily on delivering the final release for MyEclipse 3.8 on the Eclipse 3.0 platform. We hope to complete this effort in less than two weeks.
Our plans initially called for circling back to focus our attention on MyEclipse 2.8 with the intent to freeze the code base at 2.8-beta1 feature set and to deliver a GA release that will not include the features introduced in MyEclipse 3.8 Beta-2. The Webtools code contribution by IBM provided a phenomenal opportunity to provide our customers with world-class capabilities which we could not miss in our upcoming 3.8 GA. So we sent everyone back with the goal to integrate all contributed editors (including XML and XSD editors) into the MyEclipse platform while maintaining the RAD and visual development capabilities. A very tall order considering our plans to complete this release in less than two weeks.
The resulting feature gap between the re-scoped MyEclipse 3.8 and 2.8 makes us now question our initial plans for 2.8. As a result, it doesn’t make sense for us to port all of the resulting features into eclipse 2.x legacy platform, given the overwhelming popularity of our 3.0-based tools and the large feature deficit that would still remain. However, being a customer-centric development project, we would like to hear from our customers and users about their needs and recommendations.
We will focus all company resources in the next two weeks on what should be our best release yet in 3.8. We look forward to hearing from our customers and users on what makes sense afterward.

emmanuelMemberHello Maher,
I fully understand and respect the decision that your development/support effort is concentrated around ME3.x and your desire to drop off development/support effort from ME2.x.
I have one concern only and that relates to IBM Rational ClearCase plug-in. Provisional indication from IBM Rational is that such a plug-in will only be available end 2004.
We’re planning to evaluate/pilot the open source version of such a plug-in; if that works without creating issues, we would be in a position to go with ME3.8.x.
All the best with an excellent product and superior service. 😀
Kind regards
