Good question as I don’t know. All of my previous attempts to run mp3 audio from within a mobile webapp without a QuickTime player appearing have failed. I’ll ask around here to see if anyone know if it is possible in iOS4 (my attempts on iOS4 have failed).

I spent a good bit of time researching this to see if there is a good solution yet on iphone. The issue is that the quicktime player is always displayed. See the link below and scroll down to the “Play Background Music” topic. Notice that that example leads you to believe that it is possible to show some text and play music in the background. In my prototype using <audio> tag I either observed a full screen player UI or my sample text would appear but no music.

If anyone else has a working example please share it with us.
