Ivar VasaraMemberIn the Product Release Alert it was noted that upgrades from previous versions would be hosed, but new installs were unaffected. I’ve been putting off installing myeclipse until 2.5 is released. Is there any chance of a release that is for new installations only ?
Scott AndersonParticipantIvar,
Sorry, but our management won’t release anything to anyone that doesn’t meet all our quality standards. That’s one of the benefits of MyEclipse membership; we make sure that everything you install is production quality. The new release will be available on Tuesday or before.

Ivar VasaraMemberScott,
The ethic of “release early, release often” has generally been accepted as a best practice these days. I totally understand the need for QA for “official” releases, but it’d be very cool if you kept a nightly build available, perhaps even with milestones (much like eclipse itself…)
Either way, I’m happily testing 2.5 and am excited about the potential that myeclipseide brings.
Scott AndersonParticipantIvar,
While we certainly understand the “release early, release often” ethos for internal project development and we do have nightly builds internally for the workbench. However, you must understand that our user base is already thousands of developers using MyEclipse for production work. Part of our value proposition is that when you get a release from us, you shouldn’t have to worry about it. It’s a production tool for production work. We think one of worst things we could do is break our user’s primary development environments. Besides, unlike the open source folks, we actually support our products and we certainly can’t afford to do that for every nightly build. We’ve got to keep our support costs low by keeping our quality high or we either have to raise our prices or drop our support levels, neither of which we find appealing.
That said, I think you’ll find that our release cycle will continue to be very rapid nonetheless. We’ll continue to roll out large amounts of new functionality every month or two, and it will be integrated, stable, reliable, and (hopefully 🙂 well documented.
