Would like to try to use Eclipse to build Tomcat from the apache-tomcat-5.5.12-src.zip I downloaded.

Have no idea where to begin.

I would suggest to first unzip the Tomcat zip file somewhere and drill down finding all the source folders, try dropping them into a single Java Project with multiple source folders if necessary and slowly add the dependencies to the classpath to resolve any compilation errors until you have it.
