Dan DaleyMemberI have a question about the product expiration. It is a little disconerting that the product quits working once your subscription has expired. Yes the product is very reasonably priced right now so a subscription is not a problem. However, my concern is getting a number of projects (with UML diagrams, database diagrams and what not) in your format and then the price being raised to some unreasonable amount in the future.
Why is it that the product ceases to function instead of just no longer allowing updates?
Thanks,
Dan
Scott AndersonParticipantDan,
the price being raised to some unreasonable amount in the future.
Please don’t worry. In fact if you look around you’ll see that in the past three years we’ve shipped 40 commercial releases of MyEclipse and we’re about the only company in the IDE market that hasn’t changed its pricing or business model at all. The price of a MyEclipse subscription is not a gimmick or an introductory price. It’s strategic for us. Changing our subscription or pricing drastically is simply not in the cards for us since its those two things (high value and low subscription pricing that actually defines who we are).
Why is it that the product ceases to function instead of just no longer allowing updates?
Because that is what allows us to keep our product so affordable for everyone. We’re willing to strive toward building long-term customers (multiple years of renewals) by constantly adding value so that each year when you renew it’s obvious what the benefit is. In addition, if we did the “one time charge” like most companies, the price would have to be higher to cover the development and maintenance costs. Doing it this way, with a subscription, we can keep our prices as low as possible without our customers feeling “locked-in”. If you use our tools productively for just a couple of hours in a year they’ve actually paid for themselves.
I hope that clears things up and makes you feel a bit better about it. Subscription pricing is actually to the customer’s benefit. That’s why so few companies do it. 🙂
One more thing that I think you might like to read is our president’s blog on “What You Get for Your License Fees”. He lays it all out very clearly.
