– Message Body ——————————-

Hi,

I’m running Eclipse 3.2 + MyEclipse 5.0.1 on Fedora Core 5 using Sun JDK 1.5.0_08. I’ve installed MyEclipse in a extension location (~/.eclipseextensions/myeclipse) and added it to Eclipse using “Software Updates -> Manage Configuration”. Basically, everything works well.

However, on every Eclipse startup, a Requester pops up:

“Incomplete MyEclipse Installation”

The workbench must be restarted to fully complete the
MyEclipse installation process.
MyEclipse will restart now

Then Eclipse restarts and everything is fine.

We have a shared installation of Eclipse, located in /usr/share/eclipse, which is not writeable for a regular user.

We are *not* using the Fedora Core 5 supplied version of Eclipse, this is the regular version from eclipse.org

Eclipse is invoked like this:

/usr/share/eclipse/eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0/bin/java -data /home/henning/workspace -vmargs -Xms96M -Xmx512M

What am I doing wrong?

Does it happen every time you restart? If so, try and add -clean to your command line once, restart, then remove it. Does it stop asking you?

#258584 Reply

Yes, it happens every time.

eclipse -clean behaviour is strange. When I run “eclipse -clean”, the requester does not appear and eclipse works normally. However, if I run it normally afterwards (without -clean), the behaviour is back (Requester + Restart again).

However, there is a thing that helps and that is running eclipse once with a 1.4.2 JRE using

/usr/share/eclipse/eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2/bin/java -data /home/henning/workspace -vmargs -Xms96M -Xmx512M

Afterwards the requester disappears until the next “eclipse -clean”. Running “eclipse -clean” brings the requester back at every subsequent eclipse invocation, until I run eclipse once using a 1.4.2 JRE.

That whole thing sounds strange but I retried the behaviour twice with exactly that pattern. Using a 1.5 JDK/JRE brings the Requester until using a 1.4.2 JDK/JRE once. Afterwards, it no longer appears until running “eclipse -clean”.

Well we did add a mechanism for 5.0 that forces a -clean restart after installation because some features (like the new web designer) actually break if you don’t do one, so I know why this is happening, but I just don’t understand what file or setting it is looking at that is telling it “oops, time to restart using -clean”.

I’ll ask a developer to look at this.

Are you still having this problem?

#259619 Reply

Yes, I have. When using an 1.4.2 JDK it is not that reproducible anymore but does not go away completely. I’ve seen it only on Linux, though.

We will continue to look at the problem on our end on our Linux machines then, thank you.

I’m having the same problem. Manual install of 5.0.1GA on Ubuntu Dapper Drake. Both Eclipse and MyEclipse are owned by root and so are not writeable. Only my local workspace is writable. I tried launching and relaunching Eclipse as root, but that did not fix the problem. The only Java installed is JDK 1.5_06.

The one odd thing is that the workspace is copied from a Win2K installation. It’s taken some tweaking, but it seems to be working correctly except for this restart problem.

Out of curiosity, if you go to File > Switch Workspace, and create a brand new workspace, does it stop contsantly asking you to restart?

I have this problem too, why the thread is closed ?

I tried to start with a fresh workspace, the problem is still there.

Which file myeclipse is monitoring for triggering the restart ?

qbin,
Can you please post all the information we request in the Posting Guidelines thread at the top of this forum? That will give us some context so that we can determine if this is an installation issue, a configuration problem, or a bug. Thanks.

I also have this problem with the latest release (used the standalone installer as I already had eclipse installed).
When I add the “-clean” switch everything works fine. Though, as soon as I remove it, MyEclipse wants to restart after each fresh start.

Is your workspace on a network share or somewhere that user read/write permissions might come into play?

No, that should not be the case. The workspace resides on my local harddisk.
The workspace files are somewhat older (migrated from 3.0 and 3.1). But I also tried creating a new workspace as has been proposed in this thread, without success.
Currently I always start with “-clean” which seems to work. Though I find it strange.
I remember that I have had this problem before, for an earlier version of MyEclipse. Though the effect somehow disappeared then (unfortunately I cannot remember what I did before).

Jeffs,
I will file a note for a developer to invesitgate the algorithm used to determine if the workbench needs to be restarted and see if we can corner this false-positive, I’m sorry for the trouble.
