Fran_VarinMemberI have installed Sun’s application server (v8.2) and find that I can start the server manually but, when I configure it using MyEclipse the startup fails with the stack trace bwlow. I’m using v4.1.0 of MyEclipse and JDK 1.4.2. The stack trace seems to be complaining about locating the java logging facility, I’m not entirely sure why that would be the case. Any help would be appreciated.

Fran_VarinMemberSome additional informatin…
In looking at the startup .bat files that ship with the server it appears that there are some environmental configuration that they establish prior to starting the server. In looking at the configuration panel for the server in MyEclipse I don’t see any way of configuring such environmental inforamtion. I’ve seen in some of the posts that MyEclipse support has the Sun server running internally. It would be really helpful if someone would send me the configuration info that is being used internally. This way I could match the configuration I have locally to that.
Riyad KallaMemberFran,
You should be able to set environment variables on the JDK page using -D variables. Additionally if the script also adds optional JARs to the classpath, you can do this from the Paths menu.
Fran_VarinMemberI’ve gone through the starup batch files that the server ships with and have configured the lauch plugin with the following information:
Under JDK Optional Java VM Arguments:
-Dcom.sun.aas.instanceRoot=”C:\Sun\AppServer”
-Dcom.sun.aas.instanceName=server
-Djava.library.path=”C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\Sun\AppServer\bin”
-Dcom.sun.aas.configRoot=”C:\Sun\AppServer\config”
-Djava.endorsed.dirs=”C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\endorsed”
-Dcom.sun.aas.processLauncher=”SE”I’ve added the folloiwng to the append classpath under “Paths”:
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\dom.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\xalan.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\xercesImpl.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\derby\lib\derby.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\appserv-rt.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\appserv-ext.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\j2ee.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\admin-cli.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\appserv-admin.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\commons-launcher.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\jaxr-impl.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\relaxngDatatype.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\xsdlib.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\ant\libant.jar
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\install\applications\jmsra\imqjmsra.jarI believe that I have found all of the configuration information defined in the batch files. I’m still getting the same failure…it looks to me like the server is attempting to open a log file destinatin using a custom log handler (Java logging facility) and it is unale to do so for some reason. Would it be possible for you to verify how you have the Sun Server configured internally. I have no idea why the server can start manually but not through the MyEclipse launch plugin at this point. I’m really dead in the water at this point.
Riyad KallaMemberHere is the log from a clean Eclipse 3.1.2/MyEclipse 4.1.1/Sun 8.2 startup (first run ever):

Fran_VarinMemberOK, the process that I followed was to install 8.2 as directed by the sun installer. In my case it upgraded an existing 8.1 install. I then verified the installation by deploying the “Hello” application, started the server manually and tested the app. I shutdown the server and went to MyEclipse and attempted to configure the launch plugin…the results is as reported above. Can you send me your MyEclipse configuration information? The above does not seem to provide any information on what I’ve missed.
Fran_VarinMemberI removed the following entries and the server started:
Under JDK Optional Java VM Arguments:
-Dcom.sun.aas.instanceRoot=”C:\Sun\AppServer”
-Dcom.sun.aas.instanceName=server
-Djava.library.path=”C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\Sun\AppServer\bin”
-Dcom.sun.aas.configRoot=”C:\Sun\AppServer\config”
-Djava.endorsed.dirs=”C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\endorsed”
-Dcom.sun.aas.processLauncher=”SE”So the configuration I ended up with was:
Paths:
c:\Sun\AppServer\binAppend to classpath

C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\xercesImpl.jar

C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1When Installing the server:
1) Install per the installation wizard
2) Verify the installation per the installation documentation
3) Deploy the “Hello” application and verify that it works. As an aside…I really think that you (MyEclipse) should consider some instruction on configuring the MyEclipse launch plugin for this server. My experience with this was both frustrating and involved a lot of “guessing” with weird trial and error. There is no information anywhere that I could gleen on what had to be configured outside of what is in the MyEclipse documentaion on configuring servers in a generic way. You have them configured internally, it would be helpful if you could provide that insight through some kind of tutorial for each server that you support. BTW, this is not the first server I’ve configured with MyEclipse…but, I did find this experience most unpleasant.
Riyad KallaMemberThe only difference I see is that I did not upgrade a Sun App server 8.1 install, I installed 8.2 clean to a new location. Can you try that and see if it works?
Also the configuration of the connector was a 3-step process:
0) Enable Sun App Server 8.1 connector
1) Select C:\Sun\AppServer as the home dir
2) Set the domain directory to C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1Then hit OK then start it. You can’t need to setup the library path OR the default libraries, the connector does all this for you (albiet quietly which we don’t like that much).
As far as documentation goes, we keep this information in the FAQ: http://www.myeclipseide.com/PNphpBB2+file-viewtopic-t-10429.html
We support over 20 application servers and given that each one can be modified and customized to the users hearts content all we can try and do is support default installs out of the box and offer controls for basic customizations. We cannot provide extensive documentation on each app server, each version and all the possible customizations that can take place. All of our connectors are tested against default clean installs of the app servers. For the few folks who have heavily modified app servers that cannot use our connector, we suggest that they just launch their app server externally and use an external deployment from MyEclipse as well as remote debugging as covered here:
http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-67.htmlso they don’t need to loose any functionality of MyEclipse and can use their app server without needing to monkey around with the sometime limiting connector configuration.
Fran_VarinMemberThe key difference in the screenshot that you provided is that I had to make a path entry in order to get the server to start. I did not have to do this with Tomcat or Geronimo so, there was no way that I could have known this for the Sun server. Without that entry the installation did not function and produced the exeption that I noted in my post. Also, the MyEclipse documentation indicates the same customization as your screenshot. In my case, it IS a clean install…I started with v8.1 and received the same exception.
I asked several times for the configuration that you had internally and did not recieve that information. I had to resort to trial and error until I stumbled upon a combination that worked. I posted my findings so that others may benefit from my time in getting the vanilla install to work.
That is all I am suggesting, make the vanilla configurations avaliable for the various servers available. I realize that you cannot cover every possible configuration for every server however, for those that you test with internally with a clean install, it would be helpful to have access to that inforamtion so that we, the user community, at least have a base to start from. Clearly, the generic server installation, as documented, is insufficient in this case.
Riyad KallaMemberThe key difference in the screenshot that you provided is that I had to make a path entry in order to get the server to start.
For a default install, you shouldn’t have needed to do this which is why I encouraged you to perform a clean install of 8.2. Not clean “upgrade from 8.1”, but clean like a brand new directory. There must have been something different about your setup as I was unable to reproduce this on two work machines, a testing Linux machine and my home machine.
Also, the MyEclipse documentation indicates the same customization as your screenshot.
I don’t see which customization you are referring to in the screenshot. These are the basic settings for a vanilla install of Sun App Server.
I asked several times for the configuration that you had internally and did not recieve that information.
I only saw you ask once in your March 14th reply and I gave them to you in my next reply, which are identical to the screenshot that is available in our FAQ section.
That is all I am suggesting, make the vanilla configurations avaliable for the various servers available.
Can you describe how this is different than what we do now in our FAQ section with each application server we support? There are settings available for default installs of each server, what should we be doing differently?
it would be helpful to have access to that inforamtion so that we, the user community, at least have a base to start from.
Of course it is, and you do.
Clearly, the generic server installation, as documented, is insufficient in this case.
We want to make it better, by giving us details to how it is difficient above I’m sure we can improve it.
Fran_VarinMemberOK, I did the following:
1) Uninstalled v8.2 and reinstalled
2) Enable Sun App Server 8.1 connector and pressed “Restore Defaults” button
3) Select C:\Sun\AppServer as the home dir
4) Set the domain directory to C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1Then hit OK then start it. You can’t need to setup the library path OR the default libraries, the connector does all this for you (albiet quietly which we don’t like that much).
Could not hit the OK button because the dialog complains that “Value must be an existing directory”. The default value entered in the “Configuration Directory” entry field was set to a default of “c:\sun\AppServer\config”. This directory does not exist. Apparently it was not created when the server installed.
Riyad KallaMemberI am starting to get suspect of this app server install. I used this one from here:
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/download.html#sdkThe 2nd “Download” button down: “Sun Java System Application Server PE 8.2”
is this what you are using?
Fran_VarinMemberSame one, on the next page I accepted the license agreement and d/l’d the Windows version.
Riyad KallaMemberHere my system setup, please point out all the discrepencies with your own, this is driving me nuts why it’s not working for you:
