I’m sure that the solution to this exists somewhere on these forums but I’ve not been able to find it, so here goes. I just did a clean install of OS X Snow Leopard (reformatted the drive, etc) on my 17-inch MacBook Pro with 4-GB of RAM. I applied all patches and updates and then installed MyEclipse 8.0. When the install finished and tried to start MyEclipse I got the following error: “The MyEclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library” I’ve tried reinstalling. I’ve completely removed MyEclipse and reinstalled. This past weekend I even uninstalled and installed the latest 8.5 version. It should be noted that I also uninstalled Pulse during these reinstall sessions. I’ve researched this on the web and on these forums and althouth I can find references to this problem I don’t seem to be able to find a solution. It should also be noted that my drive is formatted case-sensitive and journaled and that there doesn’t seem to be any myeclipse.ini file anywhere. I’ve been trying to fix this now for about a month. To say that I’m desparate is an understatement. I’ve had to do my Java development on an old Windows machine.

I finally managed to “fix” this myself by creating a myeclipse.ini file manually in one of the myeclipse.app packages that were created. You can’t see them in the Finder but if you look in the /Library/Genuitec/Profiles/MyEclipse 8.5 directory using the Terminal you see MyEclipse.app and myeclipse.app. My next question is, what is going to happen the next time I run an update? Am I going to be in the same boat again. Also, I have always defended MyEclipse support when others have said bad things about it but I may have to change my opinion. I sent a message to the team yesterday with no reply and no one has responded to this posting yet. I’m not some pimple-faced dork living in him parent’s basement writing viruses. I’m a professional developer who pays money each year to use this product because I believe it to be the best Java IDE available. This is not the first time I’ve had this problem and this time it caused me to have to push a delivery date back two-weeks.

    charlesgoff,

Sorry for the delayed response. I have responded to your email. If you have added myeclipse.ini file manually, you should be all set. Please ensure .pulse2.locator file points to your MyEclipse installation dir, then you should be all set even if you run an update.

    Charles,

We’ve very sorry for the delay in response. We do our best to respond to all posts within a few hours and sometimes fall short of that goal during high activity periods immediately following a major release due to the load.

Regarding this particular installation issue: First, my primary machine is a MacBook Pro so I understand exactly what you’re describing. However, we haven’t seen this issue during any of our installation testing or we would have addressed it prior to release so we really appreciate you reporting it so we can dig in and get it fixed. In your email you mentioned:

BTW… I’m not sure if this matters but my drive is formatted Mac OS X Extended(case-sensitive and journaled)

I just checked my hard drive (Get Info dialog) and it reports that it is:

    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

It’s interesting that it does not report “case-sensitive”. Is the Get Info dialog where you can see the information you reported or is there another location you obtained this? Also, my MacBook (and our test machines) are in their “default” configurations. Did you change this setting manually somewhere?

What I suspect is that there is a typo in one section of the installer that is normally harmless, unless you explicitly have set your drive to be case-sensistive and I’d like to investigate that theory with these answers. Thanks in advance for your help on getting to the bottom of this. We really appreciate it.

My apologies for the sounds of frustration. I think I was actually more angry at myself for having to ask for help than actually angry at you guys. Any thing that I can do to help clear this up just ask.

You can also check what the disk is formatted as using the Disk Utility application in the Utilities folder.

Yes, the standard configuration for most Macs is case-insensitive and journaled. I have been using the case-sensitive option for as long as it’s been available. At one time there was actually a reason why I was using it but it’s been so long that I honestly don’t remember why I just always use it. I have had MyEclipse installed on a case-sensitive volume before with no trouble. In fact, the only app that I’ve ever had an issue with is World of Warcraft. It will not even install on a case-sensitive drive.

    Charles,

No worries about the sounds of frustration; we’ve all been there, trust me. I’ve done the same thing and felt a bit better afterwards so hopefully it was at least a bit cathartic. 🙂

OK, so I used the disk utility as suggested and it appears that my disk really is just journaled and not case-sensitive. And neither are any of our other Macs. So, the key to this mishap seems to rest squarely with case-sensitivity. Since our installation happens in multiple steps, I think it’s reasonable to suggest that one of those steps uses a path that is not “case perfect” with the other steps in the sequence and this difference is causing the install to fail on a case-sensitive file system. I’ll get a bug report in on this so we can investigate and get it resolved before we ship again. And thank you again for working with us to determine what was causing this problem. We truly appreciate it.

    Charles,

Just wanted to let you know that thanks to your report we’ve now fixed this issue and rolled it out. No more issues in the future. 🙂
