How is pulse supposed to work?
    Just kidding…

*** Is all of the stuff under “Add-on Software -> Browse Categories” supposed to be addable?
e.g. nWire is commercial – does my MyEclipse license entitle me to it?

*** Do I have to add it from the Pulse Explorer application?
    e.g.
Every time I start up, the Dashboard comes up and tells me a UML2 update is available (along with some others, but let’s keep it simple). Every time I depress the install button and hit OK, it spends some time performing updates and then says:

If I goto Help – Add/Remove Software in MyEclipse, click add, Browse Categories, and then pick ClasspathChecker for example, I get a similar error:

Then I close out of MyEclipse, open Pulse Explorer, and ClasspathChecker to My Profile. I right click on MyProfile and run it, it launches MyEclipse, and ClasspathChecker is available. I go back and look at My Profile in Pulse Explorer, and ClasspathChecker has two duplicate entries on My Profile (I expected only one).

***Do I need to finagle my Pulse password into MyEclipse somehow? Perhaps Pulse Explroer is remembering it on startup?

*** Do I have to add them one at a time in Pulse Explorer?
I tried adding the simplest thing I could find (linecounter) through Pulse Explorer and only Pulse Explorer, and it worked. No dups in the profile, available in MyEclipse.

That got my trust up, so I closed MyEclipse, went back to Pulse Explorer, and then I went back and picked a bunch of plugins that look good to me.
Big mistake – errors O’plenty. Each one had to be rolled back out of my profile one at a time due to errors / crashes until I actually had less plugins than when I started.

I’m going to stop there. This is already long and rambling, but I have done my best to keep it to answerable questions, and specific, repeatable behaviors that seem erroneous to me.

many thanks for your help and answers,

    Dan

    Dan,

Good questions. Yes you can add plugins from Help > Software Updates > Add/Remove software. Now understand that if you have any license agreements, you will be prompted to accept the license agreements and restart MyEclipse to have the plugins installed in your MyEclipse profile. I would recommend you to read through the FAQ’s and knowledgebase of pulse here – http://www.poweredbypulse.com.

Now coming to the above mentioned issues. Some of them are related to the update site being down and the failover site – failover.poweredbypulse.com also down at the same time. The other issues look more like dependency conflicts. conflicts. The best way to resolve this issue is to close MyEclipse. Manually open Pulse. You can find pulse explorere here – ~\Genuitec\Pulse Explorer\pulse-explorer.exe. This will prompt you to register/login/login anonymously. In case you don’t have a pulse login, I would recommend you to login anonymously. Expand “My Profiles”, this should list you your MyEclipse profiles. Click on the relevant version of MyEclipse profile. If you notice the right hand pane will list you base, shared and personal software. Personal software lists the 3rd party plugins, add-ons and features you have added to your profile. To resolve these conflicts, I would recommend you to right click on your MyEclipse profile and frpm the context menu choose [Re-install and Run]. Pulse is a powerfull tool, this automatically resolves any dependency conflict.

Does reinstall and run in pulse lose anything? Eg projects or subversion repository configs or database connections currently stored in db explorer perspective?

Also – is every plugin in pulse supposed to be available? Eg nwire looks great but it is commercial. Does it come with my myeclipse subscription?

No, you shouldn’t lose anything if you reinstall and run in pulse. Pulse provides a repository of eclipse based plugins. No all the plugins are not free. You can check the features page on what is supoorted with MyEclipse subscription – http://www.myeclipseide.com/module-htmlpages-display-pid-1.html

Everything’s working right now. I can’t update through Eclipse, but I can update by going into Pulse Explorer, so there is a way, and it’s not like I do that everyday.

I hear you saying that reinstall won’t lose anything, and I believe you. But I’ve been working with software a loooooong time, and I’ve got gut instincts that say, “just live with the minor pain that you have on this one.”
