I have tried everything I can think of to work with the MS jdbc driver and the Database explorer, with no luck. I’m entering the exact same parameters in the dialog box that I do when I connect with inline code, and all I ever get is a generic “error connecting” message.

Could someone give me instructions for simply establishing a connection to a local installation of SQL Server? Thanks in advance.

Please try the jTDS driver instead: http://jtds.sourceforge.net/

The MS Driver has more than it’s fair share of problems.
