Thomas EichbergerMemberAs I understand – I’m new with using MyEclipse – the preferred target is Eclipse 2.x, because that’s the official release of Eclipse and the 3.x version is only a “stream stable build”, whatever that means.
However I have a huge problem with this, because Eclipse 3 is so much better than Eclipse 2 that I really don’t care about that it’s maybe a little bit less stable. I’ve been using Eclipse 3 for a year or months or so, and I didn’t have any problems.
I understand that you try to supply high quality with MyEclipse, but I don’t wanna miss the features of Eclipse 3 and I don’t wanna wait longer for the MyEclipse 3 releases than for the MyEclipse 2 ones.
For me, the direction to Eclipse 2 is really an argument against MyEclipse, because I don’t understand developers who don’t use Eclipse 3. Please understand, I’m not tiresome or so, I love Eclipse and MyEclipse, I just wanna have the latest versions of both and not some release 2 of the last century.
My suggestion would be that you put more effort in the 3.7 or 3.8 versions…
REALLY:-)
Why don’t you make a small market survey? Ask all the customers here on the forums for 4 weeks what they prefer…

Riyad KallaMemberThomas,
We can definately feel your pain and that is why we provide the 3.7 builds at all (since the dev cycle between 2.x and 3.x is ~2 years). Unfortunately for the ME devs, updating MyEclipse against the Eclipse code base AS it is being developed is a lot like trying to drive a car that is falling apart as you go. You constantly need to change code, reimplement functionalities, etc. This is the key reason that the 3.x releases lag behind the 2.x stream, because we’ll get ready to roll out a release, then the next M-build of Eclipse comes out, and we find that not only does our code no longer compile, but the way we used to launch plugins is totally busted… well that means more weeks of developing, new code and testing the heck out of it… this all adds up to delays.Overall I think we do the best job we can to delivery the tried-and-true version of MyEclipse (2.x series) on time and then pour quite a bit of effort into the 3.x stream as well making sure our product works with the next gen Eclipse. The 3.7 release was an exception because so much changed in the backend on us from Eclipse’s APIs, but hopefully if they are stabalized enough the M8/M9/RCs will be painless maintenence updates for us instead of some major rewrites.
We really appreciate your enthusiasm for the product and won’t leave you high and dry, but we also need to not leave our others 2.x series users high and dry either… we have to walk this fine line really carefully to make everyone happy. And actually your idea of a poll isn’t that bad of an idea, I believe users can create new polls in the forums; why don’t you go ahead and we can get a good idea of what our users base wants? We might find some surprising results…
Scott AndersonParticipantJust out of curiosity, I checked our download volumes to see the difference between the 2.x versions of MyEclipse versus the 3.x versions. FYI, 2.x downloads exceed 3.x downloads by about 5:1. However, that may simply because 3.x downloads are only available to paid subscribers. But, I just got word that beginning with 3.7 GA for 3.0M7 we’ll make the 3.x downloads available for trial also. Let’s see if that evens up the numbers. 🙂
Riyad KallaMemberGreat news, thanks for the update Scott!
Thomas EichbergerMemberThanks for the information. I understand that it is unfortunately EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to choose what to do for the market, i.e. to push 2.x or 3.x.
About the download numbers: I don’t think that they say so much, because most of your MyEclipse customers are probably using 2.x, because there was not much other choice in earlier times:-)
About the poll: I don’t know how to start a poll here, but I really think that it’s up to the marketing people of MyEclipse to find out what the market wants and needs. So why don’t you simply start asking a lot of customers what they’d prefer? 🙂
Thomas
afitzg71MemberI have just discovered MyEclipse…I like what I see, but definitely what to use it with the newer Eclipse. When do you think this will be available to trial users?
Riyad KallaMemberIt will start with the 3.7 GA release, which is due out at the end of this month (~2 weeks)
Scott AndersonParticipantThomas,

Trust us, we do. That’s one reason why we’ll be opening up the 3.x builds for trials very soon.
