    Hi,

I’m using Eclipse 3.4 + MyEclipse 7.0M2 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04, and I use JDK 1.6.0_06. However, after I installed MyEclipse 7.0M2, Eclipse crashed every time I launched it. Here is the error log:

Can you go to MyEclipse > Installation Summary > Installation Details and paste the information here for me.

Have you tried using pulse (www.poweredbypulse.com) ? I would suggest you grab the pulse launcher and add the MyEclipse profile to it. Do you get the same error?

Sorry, I cannot provide that information because Eclipse crashed before I can see the Installation Details. 🙁

I install Eclipse 3.4 first and everything seemed to work fine. Then I install subclipse 1.4 and MyEclipse 7.0M2 (by ArchivedUpdateSite), and Eclipse just crashed everytime I launched it.

I think I’ll give pulse a try and I’ll let you know if it fixed my problems.
Thank you for your help 🙂

Let me know what result you get with pulse.

Hi, I installed MyEclipse 7.0M2 using Pulse and it worked without problems if I use default JDK 1.5.11 (also installed by Pulse).

However, I need Java SE 6 so I installed Java 1.6 Latest using Pulse. Then it crashed again….
    Here’s the error message:

I tried that solution but it didn’t work…
I’m not sure what caused my problems now (JVM or MyEclipse?).

I think I’ll stay with Eclipse 3.3+MyEclipse 6.0 for now and wait for MyEclipse 7.0 release. Hope the stable release of 7.0 will fix these problems.

Thank you so much for your help.

I think this is mostly a vm issue. The 7.0 GA release should fix this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Hi,

I have downloaded MyEclipse 7.0M2 using Pulse but every time I start it up, it freezes on the screen where I set the workspace. I am on Linux Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. Any help would be appreciated. Below is a copy of the errors I am getting. I have also tried using an older vm com.sun.java.jre.linux.x86_1.5.0.011, but still not working.

    Thanks

    Hi,
What do you get if you types “java -version” from the command line?

    #290719 Reply

    java version “1.6.0_10”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)

    Justin that’s really strange.

    When you say

I have also tried using an older vm com.sun.java.jre.linux.x86_1.5.0.011, but still not working.

, you mean from the Pulse Explorer you modified the MyEclipse profile to use the 1.5.0 Supporting JRE? Or did you mean something else?

Also is your setup of Pulse or install of MyEclipse strange in anyway? For example did you install Pulse to some location under a different read/write perms than MyEclipse, or do the install as root and trying to run it as your user account or something?

The current MyEclipse 6.6 doesn’t run on anything higher than 1.6.0_03, especially not on 64 bits Linux systems.

I wonder whether the MyEclipse team has explicitly tested with Java 6 and 64 bits for the ME 7.0 release? (haven’t tried myself yet, just curious)

1.6.0_10, bits and pieces, but no, not 64-bit. It’s a stretch goal for us right now (not that it’s not important, just sitting behind tooling enhancements and so on.) but I really wouldn’t expect to see a fully vetted/tested 64-bit build until 8.0, we just don’t have more than maybe 3 or 4 customers that are hitting a 2GB heap space limit and stopping them from working.

But like everything in computers, it always gets bigger/faster/better, so at some point we’ll have to do it. Our task lists for 7.1, 7.5 and 8.0 are booked up as-is with a lot of kick ass changes that management is having us focus on.

    1.6.0_10, bits and pieces,

I’m delighted to hear that you’re testing with Java 6 update 10, even though it’s only ‘bits and pieces’. Java 6 u10 has been an important release and probably quite a lot of people will (soon) have it as their default JVM.

but no, not 64-bit. It’s a stretch goal for us right now (not that it’s not important, just sitting behind tooling enhancements and so on.) but I really wouldn’t expect to see a fully vetted/tested 64-bit build until 8.0

A little less delighted to hear that 😉 Of course I do understand your position. In our own development we too have to make choices. Seemingly little things have to be postponed, simply because a day has only 24 hours (of which you can only realistically spent 18 orso on coding :P) and many little things simple add up to *a lot* of time.

we just don’t have more than maybe 3 or 4 customers that are hitting a 2GB heap space limit and stopping them from working.

That’s probably true indeed. We’re working on a pretty large app (several projects open, with each project having at least 500+ classes and 1500+ JSP pages, with the largest projects easily exceeding that by a large factor). Taking all of that into account, giving MyEclipse itself ‘just’ 1GB of memory is typically enough.

There are some other factors though. Our app is aggressively caching stuff and that can easily exceed 2GB. Even though MyEclipse doesn’t need the heap space, the app does. This means we really like to develop on 64 bit workstations.

On top of that, 64 bits is not only about heap space. There are architectural improvements too, which causes an increasing number of people to install a 64 bit version of Linux. I’ve come to understand that for the Windows platform an increasingly number of installations are now by default 64 bits

with a lot of kick ass changes that management is having us focus on.

Looking forward to it, although I really hope to be able to keep running MyEclipse on our 64 bits workstations. All the kick ass features in the world won’t help if MyEclipse simply doesn’t startup anymore. I might try to run the 32 bits version on the 64 bits systems then, but we had mixed results with that in the past.
