This is kind of a nuisance. When I open a file of any type in the IDE then some random other file that I already have open gets closed. It is random as to when it will happen and to which file it will choose to close. The only way I can prevent it is to go into every file I currently have open and make some change so that it is unsaved before I open anything else. The minute I have saved files MyEclipse will decide that I already have enough windows open and replace them with the any new window I open. It happens when I have more than one file open but the number of open files that make it happen changes. I am constantly having to go through my project to find and re-open files that were already open because they get closed.

    How can I fix this?

It started happening in 9.1 a few weeks ago and is now doing it in 10.0.

    gmascherino ,

Sorry that you are seeing this issue.

Can you answer some more questions for us ?

    1) Can you share your Operating System and version details ?

    2) Have you made any changes to the 9.1 few weeks ago like installing a third party plugin which would have caused this issue ?

    3) Can you switch to a new workspace, replicate the issue and check the .log file which is located at <workspace dir>/.metadata/.log for any errors of interest. If there are any errors logged then please paste the contents of the .log file here for us.

    4) Can you also attach a screenshot of the Window > Preferences > General > Editors ? If the option to ‘Close editors automatically’ is checked, please uncheck it and check if the issue persists.

    1) Windows Version Info: Windows XP SP3 – Build 2600 101209-1647, 3 GB RAM. I am up to date on OS updates.

    2) I have only been using MyEclipe for about two months and during that time I have changed from 8.6 to 9.1 to 10.0. I have also added GWT, subclipse, and subversion although I don’t use either subclipse or subversion from MyEclipse really. This laptop was used by someone else with a different user account before I started using it.

    3) I went through the log and didn’t see any issues that jump out. Really the only errors that I saw were caused when I did a search and my project was out of sync and were at least 30 minutes older than when my last occurrence of my windows closing happened.

    4) I have attached the screenshot you asked for and that check-box is not checked.[/img]

    gmascherino ,

    Thank you for the details.

    1) Can you clarify if you have tried a fresh workspace ?

    2) If yes and you still the issue , can you experiment with the ‘Close Editors Automatically’ option to see how it works when you check it ? Check and uncheck it with varying number of files opened in the editor and see if it affects the problem.

    3) Can you tell us if the file that’s closed automatically appears to be the least recently used ?

Sorry for the long delay in posting a response. It has been busy.

I have gotten a new laptop since my original post and am still experiencing the same issue. My old laptop was running Windows XP and my new on is running 64-bit Windows 7.

My files are still closing automatically when I open a new file unless I make some change in an open file first. Again, it doesn’t matter how many tabs I have open. How am I the only one seeing this issue if I have the same problem on two different laptops.

Just so we are on the same page and you don’t think I am crazy here are two screen grabs of what is happening.

As you can see in the first image, I have a few tabs open. When I open another resource
you can see that the last tab is replaced by the new tab instead of just openning in a new tab. All of my other tabs remain open but only because I made changes to them before.

Sorry for the thread blasting but I have an update. After talking with a coworker about the issue I guess I am not the only one it is happening to. It also appears it only happens when opening files from the search results panel.

I am sorry that I didn’t catch the fact that it happens only from the search panel before. I didn’t really put two and two together because I was so frustrated by th issue. I hope this helps to track down the cause.

Thank you for the update. To open new editors when clicking on search results , you can go to Window > Preferences > General > Search and uncheck the option “Reuse editors to show matches”.

Attached is the screenshot for your reference.

Let us know how it works for you.
