Installed 2.7 but got 2.6 [Closed]

I had MyEclipse 2.7 up and running under linux at one time. However, I had to rebuild my Linux System and lost the configuration.

I have reinstalled the system… I have Eclipse 2.1.0 installed, downloaded you Linux 2.7 MyEclipse platform,

However, when I install it, I have version 2.6 and have no control over a Struts application or plugins for the various Applications Servers…or developing any J2EE projects.

What should I be looking at to get 2.7 version correctly installed.

When you click on Help->About, do you see a button with the MyEclipse logo on it? What is the full version string you see for the Genuitec,LLC plugins? (2.6.200 == 2.7RC2)

Also when you go to create a new project, do you have options for “J2EE” applications?

I deleted Eclipse 2.1.0 and installed Eclipse 3.0 M6 got it up and running under Root and under my home directory..
There is no .metadata/.log entry….

Then, I downloaded MyEcllipse 3.7 and tried to install that….

Under root, it Hangs and under my home directory, it keeps restarting and restarting in almost an infinite loop… I have to
log out and relog in to get it back up and started.

Weird stuff… don’t think it’s a MyEclipse bug, but a problem with my configuration of Eclipse under linux… Still researching
the problem.

When I run eclipse from the console, here’s what I’m getting… it seems to be a permissions thing…
What permissions should I have where for 3.0 M6? or what links have to be set up etc etc…

There is no .metadata/.log file in the workspace…. and because of some bug in M6 I have to run my eclipse
command with those command line arguments….

Ok now I looked at the permissions on /opt/eclipse/.config

I changed the group recursively to users and the permissoins to 775..

Now when I run eclipse under /home/stephen… from the command line, it just hangs….

No log file in the /home/stephen/workspace/.metadata folder… If I remove the workspace folder, it will recreate a new one, but still no .log.

Seems I’m getting closer, but no dice… any suggestions? 🙁

Are you unzipping eclipse AS root then attempting to run it as a user? What happens when you just login as root, unzip it, and go “./eclipse” and try and run it? Does it work?

Are you using Gentoo?

My suggestion is to unzip Eclipse AS your home user into your home dir and install MyEclipse along side it, i.e.:

/home/stephen/eclipse2.1.2
/home/stephen/myeclipse2.7

or something along those lines.

one of the reasons I suggest this is so you don’t play the permissions dance every time you need to autoupdate Eclipse or something equivalent where Eclipse needs to write into its own plugins dir.

If you NEED Eclipse/MyEclipse in a multiuser system and want everyone to specify his/her own workspaces and you are running Gentoo, take a look at the ebuild for Eclipse and see how they set the perms (Although I don’t know that htis ebuild is actively being kept up)

Yes, I did with 3.0 M6. I since Gentoo has no ebuild for Eclipse 3.0 M6 yet, I unzipped the version downloaded directly from Eclipse.org and upziped it into /opt/eclipse as root. Changed the group to users and can run “plain” eclipse as ROOT and as a USER…. It is when I install MyEclipse that I am having problems.

Also, this is not acceptable for Linux development and deployment.

I have spend enough time with the Linux port of MyEclipse… with project deadlines, I’m not able to spend more time trying to install this product. I think you have a great product, which is why I bought it… works under windows… But I program under Java because I program for Windows, Linux and OS X platforms…

As far as not seeing any config options under M6, did you be sure to follow the install notes?
If that didn’t fix it, continue on below:

You mentioned previously that you tried running the ME installer as root and as user, but then somewhere along the way you changed installs of Eclipse and tried some other things so I want to clarify here: With your 3.0M6 install that you seem to have working (installed AS root, chown’ed to users), how are you running the ME installer now? What happens when you run as root and as user?

Keep in mind that the MyEclipse installer needs to create a ‘links’ directory under the Eclipse install dir and add a file there. So there could be permission problems here depending on how you were running the installer.

Ok I see you tried a sort of ‘best case setup’ just to see if it worked, that’s good we can work from here. In your eclipse dir do you have a links directory? Are there any files in it? What is the contents of this file? (should be 1 line with path to MyEclipse install). Is there any info in your ~/workspace/.metadata/.log file that might be telling?

I can understand your frustration, but unfortunately without your coorperation there is only so much we can do. The most general plan of attack I would have for you right now is to:

1) Clean off all installs of Eclipse, MyEclipse and any emerges of eclipse
2) Login as yourself (not root)
3) Download Eclipse 2.1.2 from Eclipse.org and unzip it to ~/eclipse2.1.2
4) Make sure to run eclipse first
5) Download MyEclipse 2.7RC2 and point it at your eclipse install, then install it to ~/myeclipse2.7rc2
6) Start Eclipse, and see where you stand. If everything worked, THEN you can start messing around with moving the installs over to /opt and changing the permissions appropriatly. Keep in mind that you ~/eclipse2.1.2/links/<file> will still need to point to the correct install dir for MyEclipse.

If this didn’t work above, then I would start troubleshooting other things like the JRE that the installer is attempting to use to run. A lot of times people have problems with the installer picking up gcj or kaffe as the JRE to use to run itself instead of a valid Sun or IBM or Blackdown JRE.

Ok…. I’m back to Eclipse 2.1.2.

Did the Gentoo Ebuild Install.

Downloaded MyEclipse 2.7 rc2. Installed it through the wizard.
Everything looks OK.

So, I go to the Windows -> Preferences -> MyEclipse to look at the Applications Servers
section. There are no application servers under that section.

I can get to the MyEclipse Perspective, but nothing new exists there…. Except the MyEclipse
menu, but that only has a link to the MyEclipse home page and a About MyEclipse…

If I go under the Help -> About Eclipse Platform and click the MyEclipse Icon, I see
that I have

VERSION 2.6.200
Build Id 200312091200-2.7-RC1

All the version numbers for the plugins are version 2.6.2

Any Ideas…

I go to create a new Project and there are no J2EE projects to create

Just

Simple
Java

Under Java there are no Web Projects or anything…

Sorry to be such a pain… but I would like to get this back to where it was at one time…. and SOMETHING I’m
doing isn’t getting there.

You aren’t a pain at all, we want to get you up and running if its within our god-given powers 😀

Ok real quick, the 2.6.200 == 2.7RC2 release. The way the Eclipse autoupdater works, is it looks at your current version (say 2.6.000) and if anything newer exists on the web, it will pull it down for you. So while we were releasing RCs of the 2.7 release, we had to name them with increments of the 2.6.x series so they would be greater than 2.6 BUT less than 2.7, so when 2.7 has its GA release, we can call THAT release 2.7.000. Bottom line versions are ok, you are in good shape.

The other thing about certain options not popping up: this *sounds* like possible permission (reading filing) issue, like it can’t pull up lists of things (app servers, modules, project types, etc.). From what you said, it sounds like you emerge’ed Eclipse (as Root) which should be fine, but then how did you run the MyEclipse installer? as user or as root? If you ran it as user, I’m guessing you installed it into your home dir someplace?

It sounds to me like you ran the installer as root and then chown’ed the MyEclipse install over to the “users” group. Is this what you did? If you DID, then you could try (just for kicks, you can always reinstall it) a chmod 777 -R <me install dir> and see if that fixes it. If it does then you know its a permission problem with MyEclipse’s install.

However, if you installed ME as your user account, and its acting this way, then you could try this:
1) go find the emerge’d eclipse dir (probably /opt/eclipse or something like that)
2) back it up (zip -r -9 eclipse_backup.zip /opt/eclipse)
3) then do a chmod 777 -R /opt/eclipse
4) try and reload eclipse and see if you see the MyEclipse stuff now

I’m really trying to narrow down if:
a) its a permission error
b) if its a eclipse ebuild-permission error
OR
c) if its a myeclipse permission error

Another thing you could try is to look in the .log file I mentioned in the previous post and see if you have any exceptions while trying to load some plugins or files, this might help us narrow down where/who the problem is caused by.

Sorry I don’t have a better “oh just do XYZ and you’re all set” for you, when dealing with permissions and multi user setups its really trickie to get everything just right; but I’m here and I’m more than willing to help.

Thank you for your patience.

While I love Gentoo Linux there are many things that bug me about it and their ebuilds are one of them.

Previously, I have used the ebuild process for installing Eclipse of installing the Platform and then the JDT. that has worked
well previously when they didn’t have an ebuild for the version of eclipse I needed.

This time the permissions were all out of whack!!!

However this time they had an ebuild for Version 2.1.0 SDK. Once I emerged that, and then emerged the My Eclipse everything
came up fine.

Sorry for the problems… I’m going to review their ebuilds more carefully; and possibly write a few of my own for eclipse
that will work consistently….

Thank you for your help… the cry of agony you heard all the way across the world was me beating my head against the wall…
Now I have a Great Product set up and running…
