    😥
I recently upgraded from standard to professional to try and do things properly with UML and the like. Installed and running MyEclipse 4.1.1 with Eclipse 3.2 worked very nicely, thank you.

I then got adventurous 😳 and decided I would benefit from being able to profile and load test applications once they are deployed, so I started looking for Hyades and downloaded the TPTP 4.2 plug-ins.
TPTP has lots of dependencies, so I also downloaded and unzipped the required BIRT, JST, WST and EMF tools, oh, and JEM as well.

Finally I got it to a state where I could install cleanly with the local update site on disk and there were no pre-requisite errors, so, I ran the install with the ‘Select required’ and restarted the workspace….well, I asked it to restart. It stopped alright, but then I just got a little window that pointed me to a log file about why it wouldn’t start any more.

There seem to be lots of prerequisite failures now, despite the lack of complaints during the update process.

The log file contains things like the following: –

    and so-on…

Now, can I roll back the updates (I don’t get any promising documents about this when I search for plugin removal on http://www.eclipse.org) or do I have to reinstall Eclipse 3.2 and MyEclipse 4.1.1 and start again?

Installed and running MyEclipse 4.1.1 with Eclipse 3.2 worked very nicely, thank you.

Just a heads up, while you had some luck running these two, they are definately not supported. There were a lot of API changes between Eclipse 3.1 and 3.2 and running MyEclipse 4.1.1 (based on Eclipse 3.1) ontop of Eclipse 3.2 is sure to run you into trouble, crashes and exceptions.

Now, can I roll back the updates (I don’t get any promising documents about this when I search for plugin removal on http://www.eclipse.org) or do I have to reinstall Eclipse 3.2 and MyEclipse 4.1.1 and start again?

I’ve never had luck “undoing” major installs like this, you need to reinstall Eclipse 3.1.2 SDK and MyEclipse 4.1.1. Your initial setup was destined for disaster, and then throwing TPTP which is still in development into the mix with all it’s requirements probably made the whole thing blow up.

The best bet is to find the version of TPTP that works with Eclipse 3.1, install Eclipse 3.1.2 and TPTP version 4.whatever-is-compat-with-3.1, get that working. Then go grab MyEclipse and install it, if something breaks then, it’s easy to remove MyEclipse from the picture because it’s installed as an extension (in an external dir) and not mixed all together with the base Eclipse plugins. Then you can slowly figure out where the conflicts are comming from (Probably GEF/EMF/JEM which we ship) so you can start there with meshing things back together again.

I took that advice ( some time ago now, I have to confess ) and it did improve the situation, but whenever I try to profile anything within Eclipse or MyEclipse, I get no output at all, even when profiling a local Java application with an SWT front-end.
I’ll keep trying, once I’ve finished polishing up my WebSphere V6 administration training course again.
