Pete HelgrenParticipantIn my “Nothing but problems with ME 9” post I outlined my difficulties in keeping ME 9 running. FWIW the last 8.x worked perfectly and consustently. I WISH I had held on to the installer because I would get rid of the 9.x POJ and gladly go back.
The memory issues are many an varied. They all seem to occuer when I am editing html/jsp source. I rarely crash when just writing java code.
I followed every directive I have been given an still I get no relief. Am I the ONLY one having this issue? ME *was* a wonderful product but I am shopping for alternatives. I can rarely keep it running more than 30 minutes.
Running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit. Here is the current config:

Brian FernandesModeratorphelgren,
1) If you do want to go back to 8.6.x, please send an email to support@genuitec.com and mention your license key and code; I’ll send you the installer.
2) I would like to make sure memory issues are fixed and we know 9.1 made some major strides in this area. I have a few additional suggestions and questions, after which we can move to a more involved analysis; a highly performant IDE is one of our primary goals and we constantly focus on this area wherever possible. I know 9.0 had a few regressions in this area (primarily due to switching between our JS solutions) but 9.1 really should have fixed all that.
a) Do you use the WYSIWYG editors? If not, you can open the files in the regular source editors using the “Open With” menu action available in the context menu of each file. Chose the MyEclipse JSP Editor instead of the MyEclipse Visual JSP Designer.
b) Go to Window > Preferences > MyEclipse > Files and Editors > JavaScript and change the JavaScript mode to Turned off or Basic mode and restart. Does this make a difference?
c) When editing HTML and JSP sources – those which typically cause your IDE to crash; are these particularly large or complicated files? Are these all in the same project?
d) In your previous posts you mention the heap indicator – does it currently show the max value you have set for the heap ~ 1024M? Just want to make sure that the setting is being respected. I would also perhaps turn your maxperm size down to 384m instead of the 512m it is at now.
Pete HelgrenParticipant1) If I can get 9.1 to work, I don’t need to go back to 8.6.x BUT I need it to work consistently. I appreciate the offer. If I can’t get this stable in the next day or so, I’ll email them.
2) a) I use whatever the default is. It looks like the Visual designer is the current default so yes, I guess I am using a WYSIWYG tool.
2.b) I turned it to off few days ago after reading your updated post. It makes no difference at all.
2c) I guess “complex” is a relative term. The new project I have working in has two jsps. They both have a single element, an Iframe, and no javascript, and both files are slow to open or to switch to while I am editing and both are usually the source of a crash (e.g. crashes occur when I switch to them or open them. They are both in the same project.
2d) With the both jsp’s open and a few other files the heap indicator currently shows 68M out 144M being used. Max shows 1016M. The memory settings are a mystery to me. I use what I am told to use since I have no clue what they do or what impact they have on the IDE. I’ll change the MAXPERM size and let you know.
Brian FernandesModeratorPete,
Thanks for working with me on this – since the JS setting made no difference, your problem does not appear to be the JS validation or indexing.
Our Visual designers have not changed since 8.x but they are certainly “heavier” than the source only counterparts – from your response I guess that you don’t really use the WYSIWYG parts anyway. If you use the source only editors for the next couple of days, we can see if your problems arise from the editors.
Pete HelgrenParticipantBrian,
It seems like avoiding the visual designers is helping. Is there a way to set the default editor or a way to disable the use of the visual designers?
Thanks.
Pete
Brian FernandesModeratorPete,
Good to hear, are your problems completely gone or do they still exist in some form?
Once you open a file with the source editor using “Open With” – it will always open with that editor by default when double clicked. However, you would need to do this for each file.
To set the default, you can go to Window > Preferences > General > Editors > File Associations and select the desired file type. From the list of editor below, choose the source only version and press the Default button. This should fix it for all files of that type.
Pete HelgrenParticipantBrian,
Although things seem better, I still lose the IDE a couple of times a day. I turned off all validation, excluded everything in my project from validation have restarted the IDE several times (usually after a crash). I usually see this:
An internal error has occurred.
unable to create new native threadThen I get the MyEclipse warning box that tells me an out of memory error occurred and that I should exit. I haven’t had the IDE just “disappear” lately so at least I can exit gracefully but it is still a hassle.
Still hoping you folks come up with a solid solution…..
Pete
Pete HelgrenParticipantWhat I am also noticing, as ME 9.1 keeps crashing today, is that when I take the option to debug a jsp, it brings up the Visual editor rather than the default I set (MyEclipse JSP editor). And, it seems whenever the Visual editor is invoked a crash soon follows…
Brian FernandesModeratorPete,
1) I assume you set the default using the File Associations that I suggested earlier? In this case, it is odd that the file open with the Visual designer. I specifically tested this case and even if the file was previous opened with the Visual designer, the debugger will still use the default editor – i.e the source only editor.
2) The memory error you reported earlier seems odd. What editors are you using – just the JSP / HTML and Java editors? What server do you deploy to? Do you run several deploy / redeploy operations? Are you doing anything else within MyEclipse other than editing code?
I’m trying to figure out what you are doing in MyEclipse that is becoming so expensive, even with the validators off.
Pete HelgrenParticipant“it is odd that the file open with the Visual designer”
I thought the same thing. In fact after changing the default, restarting ME and going back to the project, the next time I opened the project and a JSP, it opened it with the visual designer, which was the last editor used for the file, rather than the default and I am guessing that would also apply to the debugger – after a change of default it still opens the file with the last editor used rather than the default.
The HTML,JSP and Java editors are the only ones I use on a regular basis. Occasionally I edit an xml file, but that is about it.
I am deploying to Tomcat 6 and Glassfish 3.0.1 and I would say that I deploy frequently (once or twice an hour) but that is a relative term.
The only additional variable is that I am using the Liferay IDE plugin but memory was an issue before that plugin was installed. From my other posts you can see this has been going on ever since I upgraded from 8.x to 9.x.
I am not a Java memory guru but I am running Windows 7 64bit with 8GB of RAM installed so I should have plenty of running room. I never see much over 4.5 GB utilized in task manager.
I am open to suggestions. I haven’t lost work but it takes a minute or so to restart Eclipse. The biggest issue is with GlassFish….it takes quite a while to load and then Liferay has to initialize so I am waiting 4 or 5 minutes to get back to where I was before the out of memory error occurs.
Pete
Brian FernandesModeratorPete,
If you chose to open a file specifically with an editor, then the default will not apply to that file. So if you ever opened a file specifically with the Visual designer using “open with”, then that editor will be used. If you’ve only been using the double click or the simple Open item; then it will use the “default” editor.
1) Do you notice any spikes in memory around your deployments? You can choose to show the heap using Window > Preferences > General > Show Heap Status. Do you recall if your memory issues tend to show up soon after deployments?
2) Are you using any special memory setting for your Glassfish / Tomcat launches?
3) What mode do you deploy in – exploded? Just to help gauge the amount of deployment taking place, if you create an EAR of your deployment – how big would that be approximately?
4) If possible, can you enumerate the features of the Liferay IDE that you use – also, which version of the IDE are you using?
5) You *could* install a 64-bit version of MyEclipse and simply give it much more memory (1024 is close to the limit in a 32-bit Java application). I don’t think you should need to do this, but it is an option, nevertheless.
Pete HelgrenParticipant“If you chose to open a file specifically with an editor, then the default will not apply to that file.”
Yeah, that is pretty much what I decided is happening which could be a bummer in a larger project because you’d have to go back and reopen every file with the “correct” editor in order to fix the issue which is an issue because after 5 or 6 opens with visual editors I usually crash….but I understand what you are saying. Does debug honor the “last open” settings? BTW, double click opens the last editor used, but maybe that is what you meant as well.
1) I’ll watch the heap as I deploy. I haven’t been watching it lately.
2) Glassfish has the following JVM args -Xms512m -Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m Tomcat has the following: -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -server -Xms384m -Xmx1024m -XX:NewSize=256m -XX:MaxNewSize=256m -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+DisableExplicitGC Those were setting I found for running Liferay in both those containers.
3) I deploy using both exploded and packaged. The current project I am working on has .wars that are 15mb and 844kb in size, not very big.
4) I am a noob with Liferay and I have a tiny portlet app that I created to wrap the servlet. The LR war is the one that is 844kb in size. It has two jsp’s and two java files. I use the Liferay project wizard and the Liferay portlet wizard to create the projects but from then on it has just been straight Java and jsp editing (and not much on the LR side). I DO use the ant scripts that deploy to the container but that is about it.
The configuration center says I am running 1.3.1v201108310601 of LR ide
5) I am not sure why I didn’t do this since I tend to install all 64 bit versions of software. Is there an indicator that tells me I am running ME 32 vs 64 bit?
Thanks
