I’m worried about the license.
Does a MyEclipse annual group membership legally permit us to build, sell and deploy j2ee websites and solely own the outcomes?
If so, does our (or our customer’s) right to continue to use the developed website (WAR, JAR etc) expire if/when our membership lapses? Background:
The first question should be the easiest question on the planet, but my travels through the web site have not really brought me to a conclusion.
Scenario:
I want to use MyEclipse IDE to build a j2ee/struts/jstl website.
I have convinced the company I work for to spring for a 2-seat dev license as per the MyEclipse website “Buy Now” thing.
We want to fully and soley own and sell the result of our work.
We do not want to share the code of the result of our work.
We are not changing or on-selling the IDE! We just want to use it to build websites!
What I found:
I got lost in a maze of assorted MyEclipse subcomponent licenses (follow Eclipse’s “MyEclipse”, “About MyEclipse” and look at the assorted contributive licenses. BEJY license http://www.bejy.org/license.html states “Every product and solution using this software, must be free of any charge.”!) I couldn’t find an outright stand-alone MyEclipse license that overrules this. Yes I know BEJY joined MyEclipse, but … ? And there’s at least 4 other licenses that I ran into before I baulked and said “It must be simpler!”.
Please tell me it’s simpler …btw: we ordered 2 licenses today – inv #xxx59 … and the manager couldn’t get the web payment form to work, so he faxed it … I had to apologise for your site, having convinced him that it was quality software. 😳 then he asked if I’d checked the license terms … 🙁 To redeem myself as not being a complete whinger: I’m enjoying the actual IDE! I’ve only used the struts form builder and jstl tag editor, and am happy enough with that, at least while prototying. Sorry if I sound cross – I thought the MyEclipse license would be cut and dried for site development.

Absolutely. The license covers the use of MyEclipse, not the web applications you build using it.
If so, does our (or our customer’s) right to continue to use the developed website (WAR, JAR etc) expire if/when our membership lapses?
Absolutely. However, if your membership expires you’ll no longer be able to use the advanced features of MyEclipse to develop. Anything you built is completely unaffected by any lapse.

Actually, it is quite direct. The license can be seen when you download the IDE and is included in each plugin’s install directory. Additionally it is available on the website here:
http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-10.htmlPlease don’t be concerned about the various licenses of any components that we use. Those licenses apply to Genuitec, LLC and we comply with them all. The only license that concerns you is the MyEclipse license above and the only real restrictions are against decompilation / redistribution of the IDE. Anything you build with MyEclipse that isn’t an IDE is completely in the clear and you own 100% title to it forever. No worries.
ribmanMemberScott,
Delighted with your reply. That was what I’d assumed when I started to trial it, but my I got caught in a tangle of clauses intended for people extending the IDE (as opposed to just using it).
Thanks heaps. Forwarding the link to this dialog to the managers.
