Weird this. Got a java perspective and a java source file in the editor window. Went to the edit menu and most of the options were greyed out (active: copy qualified name, paste, select all), so could not do find/replace. Here is the weird bit: ctrl-F worked.
Also found the Source and Refactor menus would not drop down even though the others would.
Here is the weird bit: I’m using Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity desktop and this problem occurs when the menu bar is in the program’s title bar but does not occur when the menu bar is docked in the top of the screen. That is, the menu is correct when using the default Unity behaviour (Mac-like) but incorrect when using the optional behaviour (windows-like).
Obvious workaround: use default behaviour. Quite possibly a Unity bug, but would be nice to know what is going on.
Additional news: the find/replace is also disabled with the menu bar docked, but still works using ctrl-F

    hamiljf,

Yes, that is weird. I can replicate some of the issues but it’s very inconsistent. The problems are more noticeable with a new workspace (I tried with the menu on the title bar and no menus would drop down). I see similar things in the base eclipse, so will raise a bug with eclipse, though, as you mention, it may be a Unity problem.

What makes it look more like a Unity problem is that the workaround mentioned in this FAQ (workaround 2) does work. It causes the menu to be displayed within the application window (in the old way) and it acts fine, with no unexpectedly disabled menu items, that I could see. So that would be a fix for you, for now.

Please let us know if that workaround works for you.
