Had 6.5 installed and started running into a startup hang while attempting to load workbench — got to loading sqlexplorer and just hung.

Deleted 6.5 install and re-installed 6.5 (have given up on 7.0 for the time being).

Workbench starts up now, but am getting reports that
    “Multiple operations have reported errors”

    Specifically: “Initializing Java Tooling”
assertion failed: Path for IClasspathEntry must be absolute
    and
    “Update Installed JRE’s”
assertion failed: Path for IClasspathEntry must be absolute

I am also seeing this in the explorer-console log on startup:
SEVERE: Property base.dir exists in multiple configuration files.

    Ideas??

    Thanks

What version of Eclipse have you setup MyEclipse with? Did you use the All in One installer?

Used Pulse explorer — thought that would install what I needed, including base Eclipse but suspect I missed something here….

About box shows Eclipse platform 3.3.3 if I read it right.

I did not specifically or separately install eclipse.

Can you switch to a new workspace and start MyEclipse again. Do the errors go away? I’m suspecting this to be a workspace related issue.

Tried a new workspace — workbench will not start::

    # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
    #
    # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x02fafae4, pid=9517, tid=3086588112
    #
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.5.0_11-b03 mixed mode)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libuxl.so+0x9acae4]
    #
    # An error report file with more information is saved as hs_err_pid9517.log

Looks like the common libuxl issue there.

Opened workbench again with the same workspace I was using yesterday and the workbench came up fine this time. Who knows, maybe it will work now…

When I feel really brave I will try a parallel install with 7.0 M2

Clarify something, though — when I install via pulse, it will also install the required eclipse version as well??

I do intend to install in a different location from the 6.5 install.

Does this mean that if I have both 6.5 and 7.0 installed I also have 2 versions of the base eclipse installed too?

    Thanks

If you want to setup 7.0M2, you will have to switch to the Ganymede profile and then add MyEclipse 7.0M2.

Does this mean that if I have both 6.5 and 7.0 installed I also have 2 versions of the base eclipse installed too?

You will have Eclipse 3.3 and Eclipse 3.4 setup but they will share the common libraries, Pulse maintains a union of ALL products and ALL plugins, not a single duplicate exists. it’s the most space-optimized way to have multiple installs.

    Installed 7.0 M2 in a new location.

Now the MyEclipse installation seems incomplete. By that I mean that new-> project does not have any MyEclipse project options like it used to.

Installation summary shows MyEclipse Reports, but no menu option to add that capibility, there are also rather limited MyEclipse perspectives available.

Only MyEclipse perspectives available are Database Explorer, Image Editor, Javascript, and UML. No enterprise java project.

Used Pulse to install, without separately installing anything other than the already-existing 6.5 install (which still seems to work in spite of the 7.0 splash screen).

    Howard,

When you did the 7.0M2 install, did you try and open a new workspace or the existing one? Could you try opening a new one?

The reason we keep going back to this is because all your actions are exactly rgiht, all your log information shows that your install looks good (right JRE version, right Eclipse, right MYEclipse version, etc. etc.), the fact that it’s still totally busted is really strange. We are just trying to rule out little things at this point.

Tried with a new workspace (again), same result. It appears to me that when I select or enter a workspace on startup and the splash screen displays the
processes in its status bar, not the same number of processes seem to run.

By that I mean that if I watch the startup messages flash by (no, I can’t read that fast), I can see genutec features loading and the progress bar reaches the end
of the splash screen in my 6.5 install, but in the 7.0 startup the progress stops a little less than halfway through and starts up the workbench.

Its like is doesn’t see the MyEclipse plugin(s) or at least not all of them on startup.

Latest startup seems to support this from the ‘unable to access file’ messages in the error log::

Maybe need to look at file permissions if I can figure out which plugins directory its referring to…

    Thanks

Good pt, permissions are probably the next thing to check here.

    1. What user did you run the Pulse installer as? Is it the same user you are trying to run Pulse as to install/run MyEclipse?

    2. On the initial profile install, did you change the default Common and/or Software install dirs in Pulse from Pulse’s defaults to something else?

Ran both Pulse and ME installs as non-priv user xxx (not my real name).

Permissions all coincide with this user/group as I think they should.
The ‘missing’ files from above are all in that user’s Pulse/Common/plugins dir and perms look correct (664).
Haven’t checked to see if the META-INF/MANIFEST.MF is indeed present in those jar files, though.

I start X with that same user, and launch ME via the icon through Fedora menu options.

All that seems to be in place as far as I can tell.

I did at first try to install Pulse in /usr/local but ended up installing in ~xxx/ ( /home/xxx/Pulse).
Just noticed that there is a /usr/local/Pulse directory as well as a /home/xxx/Pulse directory.
Re-named the /usr/local/Pulse dir, but startup of 7.0 M2 did not change (still missing MyEclipse options).

My workspace is not in the default location (I am not interested in using the /home directory/filesystem for that purpose).
My workspace(s) is/are in /opt/Workspaces, although I did try a new workspace in the default location with the same results..

I’m scratching my head here… everything you are reporting looks fine. You aren’t on 64-bit Linux, you installed everything with the correct permissions. You tried a new workspace… besides wiping everything and trying a brand new clean install to *all* default directories right out of the gate just for kicks I really cannot think of what could be going on here.

What version of Fedora are you on? Maybe it’s a way old version and it’s making the GTK/SWT integration sad… I’m digging for things here now 🙁

    Riyad,

Just uninstalled everything – not an easy task particularly since the pulse explorer uninstall kept complaining that a temp-0 profile was in use (it wasn’t) and could not uninstall. I had to go through my filesystems and manually delete files and directories. A little daunting since I ended up with artifacts in the user home dir, root home dir, /usr/local where I had attempted to install pulse and ME, and the user home where I ended up having to install.

Once all the pulse and ME installations were deleted (kept the workspace I was using, though), I re-installed Pulse and went through pulse-explorer to re-install
    1. ME 7.0 M2
    2. ME 6.5
    3. ME 6.5 reports and matisse
    4. ME 7.0 M2 matisse

I did have to close pulse explorer prior to install of (2.) above because I got java heap space errors. A re-start of pulse explorer seemed to get the process going again.

Bottom line, it looks like everything has installed correctly (haven’t yet actually worked in either yet), and I have the ME options available in both now.

Can’t say I am particularly happy with the entire process the past few months and would rather be able to pick the directories where I have to install (used defaults for everything except the workspaces which are in /opt/WorkSpaces). Fortunately I did size my /home filesystem to accommodate this install but had not counted on having to install here. I can see where that could be an issue with linux users depending on how they have partitioned their systems…

Hopefully I am back on track if I can now actually get report projects to work with Birt 2.3 now..

    Thanks for the help.
