MyEclipse 7.0GA, “Enable all m2eclipse features” (on the Maven4MyEclipse preference page) is required to import and existing maven project (the default wizards only allow creating a new project).

Importing an existing [maven] project is a common task, it should be enabled by default.

So it was a question of slightly aggravating a very few users who use both, versus completely aggravating a very large number of users. We chose the former.
