I am trying to install the latest Mylyn version by using the update site on the official page: download.eclipse.org/tools/mylyn/update/e3.4

I went to Software updates -> Add/Remove Software -> Personal Software -> Add -> Add site.

Then… here is what I’m getting (definitely not Mylyn):

By searching the forum the closest issue I could find is https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/another-update-prooblem/, but the suggested solution in there ‘just retry’ doesn’t work for this case. I’ve already spent more than 1hour trying and retrying and the only thing I’ve got is this long exception and an increased level of frustration.

I am getting the same error with other plugins too (f.e. de.luskutov.BytecodeOutline), so I’d tag this as a critical problem that needs to be addressed right away. In fact in my case this is a showstopper as I cannot access my local Mylyn tasks and so I cannot do my work.

I really hope to hear a solution from you right away.

There have been more than 10 hours since I’ve reported this issue and got no comments on it. I have to emphasize the fact that it is a showstopper for me and that basically I’ve lost all work day due to this problem.

Can I please get an answer?

While I don’t have an absolute proof for it, I’ve watched my network monitor to see if there are any opened connections while I’m trying to install the new plugins. And I cannot say I’ve seen any, so I’m wondering if this works at all!

Alex,

I couldn’t reproduce this problem, but think it’s a symptom of something bigger. “failsafe” is our fail-over, catch-all repository that we host incase the host for the software you are trying to install is down, unreachable, etc.

For you to fall back to failsafe AND fail on failsafe is a symptom of Pulse not being able to hit the primary update site, any registered update sites in Pulse that also mirror that information and failsafe itself — that is almost always indicative of a network connectivity issue.

If you are behind a proxy at work, please navigate to Window > Prefs > Pulse > Network Connections and make sure the proper preferences are set so Pulse can communicate via your proxy server and get outside to the real world.

In addition to that, an even faster/easier way to install Mylyn is just to use the existing software catalog — it points at the same production update site you were registering and installing from, but has a slightly friendlier flow with regards to optional components if that mattered.

Of course, using the update site directly is perfectly valid as well. I included all the screenshots from my testing so you can follow them if you wish.
