I have added the update URL you state on the QuickFix announcements, but still I don’t get the quick fixes. I can’t find the place where I setup the update URLs to confirm that I have the correct URL…

Where did you add it? Did you try:
Help > Software Updates > Find and Install > Install New Features > “New Remote Site”, and then enter the URL from the post, then check it and hit Next?

    Yes, the URL there is
    http://www.myeclipseide.com/products/eworkbench/updates-3.0

I click next, then the list is empty, and the automatic updates don’t show any notifications. The automatic updates have prompted me to dl the 3.8.4 version, but this was before I added the above URL

There’s some confusion here. The quickfixes by themselves are not available via the update site, as an update to 3.8.4. They must be downloaded and applied manually if you have already updated to 3.8.4 before the quickfixes were available, based on the date stamp in the quickfix announcement. If you’re doing the update now (or did it recently), the quickfix mods will be included in an update from a prior version.

You can tell if quickfix 2 has been applied by looking at the version number at Window > Preferences > MyEclipse and noting the version number. If it doesn’t contain ‘QF2’, then you’ll need to download and apply the fix as described in the initial announcement.

Ah, now I get it. It seems stupid though to put the quickfixes only as manual downloads, as it requires to check the announcements periodiacally. If I haven’t checked the forums, I would have no idea about the quickfixes, as I had about the 3.8.4 version. I think that the whole point of automatic updates is just that, to let the software manage the latest version/patches, instead of the user. I think you should look into that.

It’s a good point. Up until this time, we’ve been synchronizing our major version number with Eclipse’s, which has only left us two others (3.x.x) for major and minor releases, and none for bug-fix only. We’re going to look at revising this policy to let the major number float and then we’ll be able to push quickfixes as you suggest.

Maybe you could add another number too ? This could be just an internal number like, 3.8.4-qf3, that would differentiate the version for the quickfixes. I think that new users coming into the site would not like to see all this, but since they would be new users, they would download the newest version anyway. Existing users should use the automatic update functionality, so this is going to work seamlessly I think.

We need to appease the Automatic Update module, adding version numbers won’t be recognized, so 3.8.4-qf1 and 3.8.4-qf4 are the same to it, so people would still need to manually download the quickfixs.

That’s the goal. Everything should be via AU… maybe not huge major releases that require different base Eclipse installs, but atleast everything smaller. We’ll see.
