RobertGloverJrMemberWould very much appreciate answers to the following questions from a knowledgeable MyEclipse support person. Potential sales/purchases of MyEclipse may hang in the balance.
My first question is, is MyEclipse Blue the only version that provides integration with Websphere? (The “application server connectors” feature, which is available for all versions of myeclipse seems to include support for websphere (http://www.myeclipseide.com/htmlpages-func-display-pid-55.html)).
My second question is, Blue version does not include the features of “Myeclipse for Spring”, but I might want to have those features. Is this an either/or situation or is there a capability to have both MyEclipse Blue and MyEclipse for Spring together?
My third question is, the comparison pdf at http://www.myeclipseide.com/Blue/blue_vs_rad_detail.pdf
says MyEclipse Blue uses Eclipse 3.4. That seems odd since that is by now an old version of Eclipse. Also, since MyEclipse has update sites is is possible to load MyEclipse features into an existing Eclipse installation?
Brian FernandesModerator1) We do have connectors in MyEclipse for WebSphere but these are very basic and given the fact that WebSphere takes a lot of effort to work with, I would only recommend the highly enhanced connectors in MyEclipse Blue and not MyEclipse.
2) Unfortunately you cannot use the ME4S features in Blue at this point and must run both products separately. On the licensing front, I’m sure our subscription team can offer you a price which is lower than blue + spring licenses if purchased separately. You can share the workspaces used but must use both products separately. We are looking at how both products can be combined in the future.
3) The PDF is outdated – Blue 8.6 is based on Eclipse 3.5 and 9 is based on Eclipse 3.6 – I’ll make sure those documents are updated. Yes, it is possible to load MyEclipse features into an existing Eclipse installation using our update sites – it is not the recommended solution for Blue and you will need to tweak some configuration files by hand, but can certainly be done.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
RobertGloverJrMemberThank you for you quick and helpful response. I do have some further questions.
1) Can MyEclipse handle the following situation. If we purchase multiple licenses for use by a team of developers, we want our lead architect to customize a copy of MyEclipse for xxxxx to have some additonal plug-ins that the team uses and other customizations. Then we want to distribute this customized version of MyEclipse for xxxxx to the rest of the team so that they can install it and immediately start working without the need for each developer to separately re-do all those customizations and added plug-ins. Currently we do exactly that with a plain vanilla Eclipse– after customizing it, we simply zip it up. Then each developer unzips it and is ready to go. What we are trying to avoid is an “IBM Rad” installation situation– you know how awful it is to indtall IBM Rad– it takes hours and hours, and then a lot of updates need to be applied. And this has to be done individually on each developer’s workstation. What we would like to have is an ability to, in effect, simply unzip a customized version of MyEclipse for Blue onto each developers workstation that when unzipped is ready to use the way Eclipse is.
2) Is there any “hack” or “trick” whereby by combining things it is possible to have, in effect, a MyEclipse for Blue that has installed into it the MyEclipse for Spring plugin? The reason for asking this is that on the MyEclipse download page there is an option to install the MyEclipse for Spring plugin into STS. So, it is natural to wonder whether the MyEclipse for Spring plugin can, similarly, be installed into MyEclipse for Blue.
Brian FernandesModerator1) Within MyEclipse, we have a configuration center which you can use to add and remove parts of MyEclipse as well as 3rd party software. Once your team lead achieves the configuration he wants, he can share this configuration, along with other workspace specific preferences (coding, formatting templates, compiler settings, etc) with all developers in his team. A developer would receive an invitation email and simply click a link which will start the installation process on his machine, at the end of which he would receive the same configuration – on any operating system. If the team lead makes changes to the shared configuration, his devs will receive update notifications and can apply those changes too – so it is a “living” shared dev environment. The subscription can also be shared and updated along with the profile.
Later this year, we will also be adding the ability to generate custom installers from within MyEclipse – customize your software and then generate an actual installer which can be distributed to other members in your team.
As far as ZIP based distributions go – you can choose to install MyEclipse into a base Eclipse install from our update site, make a few tweaks to the configuration files required for MyEclipse to work correctly and carry on with your existing practice.
2) While you can certainly install MyEclipse for Spring into Blue using the update site, unfortunately MyEclipse for Spring will not function due to an incompatibility at the licensing level and you will hit invalid license errors. We will consider doing the work to make this possible in the future, but need to first gauge how popular the combined product would be before investing resources in this direction. To that end, can you please send an email to subscriptions@genuitec.com with further details, specifically the number many licenses you would be interested in so it can help with our analysis?
Do let me know if you have further questions.
