    Hi,

This is driving me crazy. Everytime my project is built I get serveral of these exceptions which of course brings up the Eclipse errors view. I have MyEclipse validation disabled and they still occur. How do I get rid of them?

    Eclipse 3.0.1 and MyEclipse 3.8.2

    !ENTRY com.ibm.sse.model.jsp 2 2 Oct 03, 2004 18:10:43.390^M
!MESSAGE SAXException while reading descriptororg.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Missing whitespace before SYSTEM literal URI.

If you right click on your JSP files, do you have any XML editors associated with them? ANother gentleman had this problem, turned out he has XMLBuddy’s XML editor associated with his JSP files, that’s why I’m wondering.

MyEclipse is the only handler I have installed for XML or web files. I did check, but as expected MyEclipse is associated wth JSP. I went through all of file associations in the preferences and all of xml and web stuff is mapped to MyEclipse editors.

The first instance I have of the problem was on 25 August. I am not certain which release this corresponds, but I upgrade within a day or two of a new release being available. You can probably map from the date.

    !ENTRY com.ibm.sse.model.jsp 2 2 Aug 25, 2004 19:35:09.140
!MESSAGE SAXParseException while reading descriptorMissing whitespace before SYSTEM literal URI.

    Joel,
Is this exception from the log file? Can you give me the whole stack trace? Also is there any notable error in the MyEclipse interface? Are you seeing an error in the problems view? Any error markers in these pags? Can you give a sample page that causes this error for me to look at?

    To answer your questions:

    1) Yes the exception is from the Elipse log file.
    2) There is no stack trace, simply this message.
    3) No errors in the interface.
    4) No errors in the problems view.
    5) No markers of any kind that indicate this problem that I have noticed.
    6) There is no indication in the error as to which resource is triggering the exception, so I do not even know the file type. Rathere difficult to put together a test case in this situation.

So I am sorry, but there does not seem to be very much I am able to supply you with to help resolve this. I really hate to say this, especially as I just renewed my licence today :?, but I am about at the point of uninstalling ME. This is really very intrusive to work.

For what it is worth, I have a second machine, my wife’s, that I just set up with ME today. It has the same configuration as my Eclipse environment. Her machine has yet to display this behaviour.

One thing I do not think I have mentioned is that each time the problem occurs there are several errors reported. The full set is:

    !ENTRY com.ibm.sse.model.jsp 2 2 Oct 04, 2004 15:40:43.765
!MESSAGE SAXParseException while reading descriptorMissing whitespace before SYSTEM literal URI.

    !ENTRY com.ibm.sse.model.jsp 2 2 Oct 04, 2004 15:40:49.609

    Thanks for your thoughts,

I’m confused… there is no evidence of this issue occuring on the interface at all, and you are on the verge of uninstalling MyEclipse because of stray messages in your log file? I don’t think I’m understanding your problem fully then, because it has to be more than stray messages for you to be ready to uninstall ME because of it…

Creating a new workspace is *always* a good way to get rid of weird behaviors, I would suggest that next and see if the problem goes away.

It is not simply the stray messages, it is the fact that every time one of these errors occur the Eclipe Error’s view pops up. This is rather disruptive. I have been putting up with this for six weeks and it finally got the better of my patience.

One solution could be that I remove the Error’s view from fast view mode. But I have used it that way for 2+ years and rather like the way I have my desk top is set up.

Yes I could spend the time to create a new workspace. If I took that approach with every problem that needed solving I would get very little work done. It “easy” to say create a new workspace, but in reality it is the better part of a day before I have my environment fully configured, all of my preferences reloaded and checked, my projects intalled from CVS and I am back to work. Not a pleasant prospect.

So I am sorry if you think that my reaction is extreme, but overall the time that I spend keeping ME functioning is excessive given the value I get from the tool set. I am sorry about that, because I really like you folks and really like the idea of what you are putting together. But in the end of the day I have to be able to balance the books and realize a productivity gain if I am going to keep on using a tool.

    NEW IDEA
Here’s a long shot… but I wonder if the state of that plugin that keeps throwing the error is messed up. Can you try shutting down Eclipse and going into the following directory: <workspace dir>\.metadata\.plugins\com.ibm.sse.model.jsp, and MOVING that directory’s contents to your desktop or some temporary folder, then try restarting Eclipse… did that work? Did the problem go away? If not, go ahead and put those files back and see if any of the suggestions below help.

:|, oh yes then I agree this is maddening. I hadn’t realized there was a UI artifact to this behavior.

but in reality it is the better part of a day before I have my environment fully configured, all of my preferences reloaded and checked, my projects intalled from CVS and I am back to work. Not a pleasant prospect.

    1) Launch Eclipse
    2) Export preferences to desktop
    3) Restart Eclipse
    4) Create new workspace (e.g. c:\notBrokenWorkspace), reimport settings from desktop file.
    5) Use Windows explorer to copy ALL the projects (and ONLY the project dirs, don’t include the .metadata dir) from workspaceOld to notBrokenWorkspace
    6) Alt-tab back to Eclipse, use File > Import to pull all your projects copied into the new workspace available in the workbench
    7) Smile and have a good day

Of course, if you do have a lot of projects, even this isn’t very helpful. Something you can try ahead of time is to go into your <eclipse dir> and erase the configuration directory and then restart Eclipse. You’ll notice (if you installed ME via manual install) that MyEclipse is gone, go to Help > Softwar Updates > Manage Configs, and right click do “Add” and re-add the MyEclipse extension and restart. Did the problem go away?

So I am sorry if you think that my reaction is extreme, but overall the time that I spend keeping ME functioning is excessive…

You have no thing to appologize for, I wasn’t aware of the constant popping up and overall annoying behavior going on, I agree that would have made me crack long before 6 weeks especially while I”m working. I hope the new configuration directory will help fix this, and at the least the new workspace will help. I don’t know what the problem is caused by unfortunately so I can’t be more specific.

Life is sometimes (actually frequently) strange…at the moment the behaivour has stopped. Possibly my upset energies penentrated the problem and it got scared 😉 In any case lest it comes back I will not be able to try out your ideas, but if it does I will give them a try.

Thanks for the good humour and for not letting my irritation get under your skin.

    Ciao,
    Joel

Life is exciting, I completely agree and I should be thanking you for your patience… as a customer you have a right to expect an demand a certain level of non-insanity-inducing-behavior from our software 😛

If this problem does come back, I’ll fly to your house and fix it myself!

Its clear to me after reading this email that you *need* me to fly out there and stay with you just incase anything else comes up… I’m willing to make that sacrifice and will be there tommorow.

All kidding aside, that sounds like paradise.
