You need to upgrade your BBS servers. I am getting a LOT of connection errors and timeouts.

Or move off PHP to a compiled system (cough, cough, Java, cough).

    Rogue,
Are you referring to the portal speed (using the site) or downloads and overall throughput?

As far as the portal software goes, it’s the result of a decision made almost 4 years ago, a lot of custom code has gone into it which is why we haven’t gone to some other system.

    Any suggestions?

No, just getting page responses. I click on a forum or thread and the query times out.

Some days there is no delay (like right now). But yesterday probably 75% of the time it timed out.

It comes and goes. Some days are normal, other days are really bad. The rest of my browsing seems to be good, just this site.

As for forum suggestions, I know what you mean (I read the message about it). It is just that PHP is interpreted which means it is slower than a compiled language. Unless you are using one of the PHP compilers? They take all the source code and create an executable.

But yeah, put your energy into MyEclipse :-))

That’s not good… does it correlate to the load (top left corner shows the number of logged in users)?

Bingo, that’s why phpNuke was chosen 4 years ago, and that’s why we will run it now. When I first came on I really tried to push for something “cooler” and at the end of the day it always boils down to cost/benefit. There are huge costs and very small benefits *right* now. But non of us are in love with the site as it stands now and have a design company working on some alternatives as we speak. I’m not handling that though, but I know some preliminary work is being done in that vein to make things better going forward.

As far as Java-based portal software that is all-inclusive like phpNuke… are you aware of any good ones? I know you have the Magnolias and uPortal’s out there, the CMS-ish systems, but I’m more curious about the *all*-in-one type setups… I wasn’t aware of one in Java… namely the lack of a robust Forum component that all these PHP systems seems to bundle phpBB for (which is fine, it’s a great forum system).

Um, well, um, I haven’t been paying attention……

Yes, phpBB is almost entirely driven by database configuration and quite configurable (my son played with it for a while).

I do not know of any Java ones. Maybe a good FOSS project?
