I know the size might be prohibitive, but as an option it would be nice to offer a larger download that already included the source code directories hooked up to the libraries.

Either that, or establish a convention so that it would make it easier to simply place the source in a location and have it picked up automatically.

Good suggestion, has been on our “how do we do this and not make the download 300mb” for a long time. A few download-on-demand ideas were tossed around. We are still working on this.
