MatzLEMemberHi,
first of all: thumbs up for the Struts Designer!
I’ve migrated a mid sized project (~22 Forms, ~70 Actions) and the Desinger managed it. It looks very nice. But unfortunately I must say that’s all of the good thing I can see ATM.
I was very excited when I read about the designer cabality in 3.8.x but must say that now I’m quite disappointed. You can imagine that having a project of that size (70Actions…) I have some problems with the designer:
1. The routing is terrible.
There’s still the problem that multiple forwards between two actions are drawn over each other. I couldn’t find a way to re-route them manually. The “Manual Routing” checkbox simply changed the line from “cornered” to a straight line. I can’t change the starting and end points.2. No zoom.
Even a project with just 20 actions gets confusing.3. No tabs or other way to group actions and forms thematically.
I used Alien-Factory’s Struts-GUI until now (and will continue to use ist for some time…) – it’s a VISIO plugin and by that you can imagine that the routing works like a charm. Besides that, I can create sheets for each section of my application and draw the appropriate actions there. referencing actions can be drawn as “ghost actions” which can be seen as a soft link between the sheets. The Struts Designer must come to this functionality in order to be useful for real-world projects. Otherwise it will remain a toy.
If I’ve missed some functions then I apologize. I searched the Doc and the website but could only find an outdated demo of the old Flow View.

Riyad KallaMemberMatz,
We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback. I’m going to send this off to the designer dev and see what he thinks is feasible for the short term and what is no doable any time soon. Then we can prioritize and see what can get done.
Brian FernandesModeratorHi Matz,
I agree that the automatic routing will not stand up to really large configuration modules.
However, the manual routing DOES work 🙂 All you have to do is change routing type to manual and you will get a handle (bendpoint) in the middle of the connection. Drag this around as you please. You will be presented with a bendpoint in the center of every segment on a connection in manual mode. See the screenshot.
On the routing front – we will have improved automatic routing for 3.8.3 AND snap to grid for manual routing.
The screenshot also shows the zoom capability on the toolbar – can you see this in your workbench ?
On point #3 – thanks for the pointer, I will have a look at that plugin.
Agree that the documentation is lacking in some aspects.
Again, thank you for your feedback.
Brian.
PaulParticipantOn the zooming thing, and maybe this is or is not appropriate, I’d love to be able to use my mouse wheel to scroll in and out.
Riyad KallaMemberI’ll fire that off to the dev, thanks for the suggestion!
MatzLEMemberHey – the flow overview is great!
That and the zooming help alot.
And the manual routing works, too. One can’t see the handle when there are two forwards above each other – that’s why I didn’t notice.Unfortunately I just found another problem concerning struts module support – I’ll open another thread for that.
Anyway – great support!
