Hello,
I would like to see the ability for users to update the client libraries associated with a given program. For example, the current stable version of Struts is 1.3.5 (09/17/2006). The previous version, 1.2.9, was actually released in March 2005, yet the version being included in the latest release of MyEclipse (5.1.0), is 1.2.7.
Now, I understand that moving to a new major release requires a lot of integration and regression testing and can’t just be “thrown over the wall”. But the ability to grab minor updates would be beneficial to developers. In fact, it would be really slick if the client libraries could be managed via the update site the same as any other plugin, and like any other plugin, the developer could choose whether or not to include any particular upgrade at their discretion.
The inability to make these changes is detrimental to both security and maintainability and as such, to efficiency as well. The ability to incorporate security updates and bug fixes in the underlying libraries is paramount to ensuring the stability of production applications and can’t always wait for the next technology refresh in the development environment.
Please consider the criticality of this issue and even if MyEclipse can not provide a solution, perhaps the Eclipse community at-large would be interested in addressing this need.
Thank-you,
-Rod
