Web 2.0 browser crashing when launched

    Hello,

    I just installed MyEclipse 6.01 on top of eclipse 3.3.1.1 manually with both j2sdk 1.4.2_016 and 1.5.0_013 with the 1.5.0 set us as default using java-update-alternatives.

    Whenever I try to start the Web 2.0 browser it crashes immediately and suggesting that I better restart MyEclipse.

    My system:
    AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ Dual Core processor
    3GB RAM
    Debian GNU/Linux 4 (32 bit)
    Iceweasel 2.0.0.11 (=Firefox)

    Can you go to http://www.poweredbypulse.com, download the MyEclipse pulse launcher for Linux and use that to launch MyEclipse. Let me know if the browser continues to throw exceptions.

    Besides that, what does it help to fix my problem?

    I restarted Pulse, selected “Eclipse Europa for Java”. It then started to download Eclipse Europa, which I already had, and when it was through downloading, pulse crashed again:

    Sorry, but I don’t feel like debugging your new program, I want my current eclipse/MyEclipse system to work.
    In the original post you could see that eclipse is installed at /opt/eclipse/ and MyEclipse is installed in /opt/MyEclipse-6/
    And I start eclipse through /usr/bin/eclipse which is a symlink to /opt/eclipse/eclipse

    The contents of /opt/eclipse/eclipse.ini is as follows:

    Another thing I noticed …
    When I do “Find and Install” software updates -> “Search for updates …” it finishes really quickly and I can only see that it checks for updates for subclipse. I do not get a dialog screen asking me to select the eclipse/MyEclipse mirror to check. So I have the idea that it’s not checking for eclipse/MyEclipse updates.

    When I did Help -> Add MyEclipse Features … and then choose “ICEfaces AJAX and Java EE Tooling for MyEclipse 6.0.1zmyeclipse601200710” it goes in the “Quick Update” mode and crashes:

    There seem to be some pretty severe platform conflicts going it sounds like (with the constant crashes). Would you be able to download and use JRE 1.5.0_11 (specifically the _11 release). That’s the one we do the most testing with and there were some changes in _12 and later that cause some minor issues to popup, but I’d like to rule out all potential problems if possible.

    Also what does your startup script for MyEclipse look like? The one you use to run it? (please copy and paste the entire thing)

    I’ll try 1.5.0_11 as soon as possible.

    Yea the Ajax tools and Swing-based tooling (UML/Matisse4MyEclipse/Image Editor) are tied to platform specific files which is where the crashes can come from. For Ajax it’s the mozilla libraries we ship that are instrumented for the Ajax workbench and for the Swing-based tools it’s the SWT-Swing integration specifically that can barf. On Mac it has problems and causes crashes a lot (unfortunately it’s part of the platform, which is why we are participating in the Albireo project to solve this problem in a more complete manner)

    note that you set MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME to empty string, not the same as setting it to nothing… that will allow the Visual HTML Designer to work on Linux and I *hope* fix the Ajax crashing which I think is being caused by MyEclipse’s Mozilla-dependency finding your system’s install of Mozilla and not the one we ship.

    I’ve created the following shell script and deleted my eclipse.ini, since it looked like the ini file overruled the arguments from the script:

    Hmmm, looks like the exact same problem 😉

    So I went to Window -> Preferences -> Web Browser and noticed that the internal web browser was grayed out!
    The external browser was named mozilla, so I removed that one and added iceweasel, to no avail.

    I also installed 1.5.0_11, but that didn’t help either.

    Furthermore, I don’t think that my main problem is with the exact jre version, but more with my browser, Iceweasel and/or with that the embedded browser is not installed for some reason.
    When searching on the internet I found another suggestion: Install xulrunner.
    That package wasn’t installed, so I installed it, but that didn’t help either.

    What to do/try next?

    hrrm… we just blew past my level of expertise on Linux with regards to SWT/native bindings… I have another user trying to run Pulse on Linux that is getting that same “GTK 3347” error here:

    and I’m not sure how they are related yet.

    Doing searchings on Google brought up nothing, but I wonder if it’s tied to the version of GTK you guys are running. That other user is on Ubuntu 7.10, which I think was GTK 2.2 or 2.4, where as 8.04 is now GTK 2.6 (it’s not 2.8 is it?) I’m wondering if the SWT/GTK binding is having a problem interacting with the older GTK lib.

    What was happening in my case (causing the exact same problem as described above) is that eclipse tries to open a jsp file with the MyEclipse JavaServerFaces editors.
    This editor has a preview window where a small mini-mozilla is deisplayed. This however is causing problems, resulting in the error described above.

    To change this, goto:
    -> Window -> Preferences -> General -> Editors -> File Accociations -> *.jsp

    and change it from ‘MyEclipse Visual JSF Designer’ to ‘MyEclipse Jsp Editor’

    Thats how I ‘solved’ this problem.

    You want to make sure you are starting MyEclipse with a script that sets:
    MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=””

    if you do that in a script then start MyEclipse, you should be able to use the normal Visual JSF Designer
