cjbrathwMemberCan someone point me to the 64bit MyEclipse 7.0 build for Lonux?
Thanks
Riyad KallaMemberThere is not one — I really wouldn’t expected a 64-bit build of MyEclipse for a while, there are some platform specific libraries for certain functions that would not be happy campers trying to build in a 64-bit environment.
Now, that being said, you can actually install MyEclipse ontop of Eclipse 64-bit but it’s not supported. We’d really encourage you to just grab the Linux installer and use that — it works fine on 64-bit Linux.
To be clear, 64-bit Linux is on our roadmap, but it’s farther down the road. There are some immediate things for 7.x that we need to get done and targetting a 64-bit platform specifically — especially when users are not blocked with the lack of a 2+GB heap size, is not something our executive team would prioritize over other pending enhancements and bug fixes at this particular moment.
Sieg du PreezMemberRiyad,
I don’t see 64-bit Linux on your roadmap. In fact, your roadmap ends at 7.0.
A lot of developers decided to dump Vista for 64-bit Linux, how come it is not a priority of yours?
Have you actually tried to “grab the Linux installer and use that” on 64-bit Ubuntu?
Tim HowlandMemberthe pulse profile doesn’t work on 64 bit linux. Very disappointing.
cjbrathwMemberActually this whole thing with Genuitec’s approach to MyEclipse on 64bit (especially on Linux) is very disappointing ….
If I had not already paid my subscription until sep 2009, I don’t think I would have bothered at all.
What I don’t understand is how Genuitec could manage to get 64bit to work with 7.0M2, and now seem not to be able to get it working. Very strange …..
Sieg du PreezMember7.0M2 worked on 64 Linux? Didn’t work for me on Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit. They said they’re working on the issues and that is why I’m so disappointed to see that it’s still not fix in the GA. Eclipse 4.3 and Pulse install and work fine… what’s wrong with MyEclipse? Is it just an installer issue? Don’t think so, because I get dependency problems when adding MyEclipse plugins to Eclipse 4.3.1 from the update site. Haven’t tried the archived site yet. Will try later tonight…

Have you actually tried to “grab the Linux installer and use that” on 64-bit Ubuntu?A very small subset of our users are on 64-bit Linux — it’s an issue we are aware of, and want to get fixed, but when you lay out the feature budget in front of exec team and we see less than 1% of our users on 64-bit Linux AND combined with that our 32-bit builds of MyEclipse seem to mostly work fine on 64-bit, it’s *really* hard to get them to OK the R&D budget for taht instead of say adding a Profiler to MyEclipse or Groovy support or something like that.
Also, yes we did use the 32-bit installer on 64-bit Ubuntu and RedHat before we shipped to make sure it still worked.
Riyad KallaMemberthowland, cjbrathw, k278596,
MyEclipse has never had a 64-bit release *BUT* our 32-bit release has tended to work for our 64-bit customers. This includes:
* the Linux 32-bit installer
* the archived update site (Download item #4 on the download page) that you can add to any existing install — k278596 this sounds like what you want? That being said, we know the MyEclipse 7.0 profile doesn’t work on 64-bit Linux, we are working on fixing this in Pulse 2.4 (Jan/Feb release) — it’s a side effect of how strict Pulse is when honoring the platform when it tries to resolve dependencies. It’s tried to find the “64-bit” build of MyEclipse to add to your 64-bit Eclipse 3.4.1 build and dying… cause there isn’t one.
There currently isn’t a way for us to tell it to “not do that”, which is one of the things we will be fixing shortly.
It really is not that 64-bit isn’t important to us — it is and it’s *clearly* the way future users are going with Windows 7 only being 64-bit, Mac being 64-bit for a long-dang time and Linux primarily going to become 64-bit on the desktop moving forward. It’s just resource allocation right now and our 32-bit version does work.
If you guys are still getting stuck with the installs, please let me know in detail what you are trying and I’ll do my best to dig you out of the mud.
Also cjbrathw, we have a 100% money back guarantee forever. If we can’t get this rectified for you, you can request your refund any time. We don’t want any users feeling locked in.
Sieg du PreezMemberRiyad,
Just to confirm, MyEclipse 7.0 runs fine on Eclipse 3.4.1 32-bit. Had to install a 32-bit JRE and configure Eclipse to run on the 32-bit JVM.
I guess we could continue with this manual installation/configuration for the time being, but would like to see that the Pulse / MyEclipse (32-bit) issues are resolved as soon as possible.
Secondly, I really think you should reconsider the 64-bit priority. I’m not sure how you concluded that only 1% of your users are on 64-bit Linux, but apart from the existing base, you also have to consider potential users. If they have a choice between crippling their hardware to run MyEclipse or buying another option that does run on 64-bit, you surely won’t see them come knocking on your door.
Regards,
Sieg du Preez
DougMemberI agree – how do you know only 1% of your customers are on 64bit Linux? Nobody ever asked me. Am I counted in that so-called 1%?
Pontus AmbergParticipantNot supporting 64-bit Linux in a better way is really sad news. I haven’t used MyEclipse since Eclipse 3.4 came out and now I’ll probably not resume using it since I’m one of those 1% running 64-bit Linux.

cjbrathwMemberRiyad, its not so much that I want a refund … all I want is for 64bit MyEclipse to work on Linux 64bit platforms. I have to agree with the complaints being made here regarding Genuitec’s attitude to the 64bit platforms.
64bit systems are becoming a dominant force in the development world of Java and C++. I doubt very much that you could buy a 32bit based system these days…. even if you wanted to.
That being the case, most developers with these systems would like to exploit them to the fullest… and we number significantly more than 1%. How did you reach that 1% figure anyway?
During the 7.0M2 beta testing period I managed to get MyEclipse running with 64bit Eclipse on a 64bit Linux system. This is the MyEclipse installation I still have working today. I managed to get this to work by fiirst installing the 64bit Eclipse classic and then decompressing the MyEclipse 7.0M2 ArchivedUpdate site (zip file) into the ‘dropins’ directory of 64bit Eclipse classic installation.
The only problem I encountered was that I was getting the ganymede splash screen when MyEclipse started, so I rumaged around until I found the MyEclipse splash screen and modified the ‘config.ini’ file (in the configuration directory) by changing ‘spalshLocation’ variable to use the MyEclipse splash.bmp.
I have recounted this episode because I am wondering if it would not be worth Genuitec’s while to investigate the ‘dropins’ route in an effort to get 64bit MyEclipse runing on 64bit systems within a reasonable time frame.
GregMemberHey guys,
Thanks for all your feedback. We appreciate your efforts here and your desire to get MyEclipse working on 64 bit systems. Right now the development team is taking a few days off for a much needed break. We have heard you and we already have a time scheduled for some of the development team to take a closer look at supporting 64bit MyEclipse the right way. So I hope that you will give us some time to get this sorted out. Thanks.
Marc BejeranoMember… for now, I run both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Eclipse. So what! I’m not building massive enterprise applications so I have that luxury. I need to run the 32-bit versions anyways because the wireless toolkit I’m using doesn’t run in 64-bit Eclipse. I am certain that after the massive amount of feedback that Genuitec has been getting over this issue that it will be resolved shortly. If you are a company that is building massive enterprise applications then I’m sure there are other issues that need tending to while this problem is being fixed (in any large-scale project, there always is).
Be happy.
Scott AndersonParticipantm_bejerano,

You’re absolutely correct. We have a team working very hard on this issue right now. It is extremely high priority and we will get it addressed as soon as humanly possible.
