I would like to disable the autocompletion of XML-comments.
Every time I write “<!–” it gets extended to “<!– –>”. I thought I could disable this in the XML editor preferences, though changing/ removing the template for XML comments did not avail.

Do I miss something here?

Jeff,

No, you’re not missing anything. Turning off the “auto insert” flag on the template should keep that from happening, but I verified that it doesn’t. I’ve filed this issue as a bug so we can fix it in a future release. Thanks for letting us know about it so we can improve the product.
